Okkervil River's "The Stand Ins" is not only a follow-up to last year's critically-praised "The Stage Names," but a conceptual companion as well. Does it stand up to it's predecessor? The gang subjected it to some ruthless scrutiny this week. Melanie Walker and Mac Wilson joined me to also gave a listen to the double-CD from L.A.-based eccentric Benji Hughes entitled "A Love Extreme," and young Swedish popster Lykke Li's "Youth Novels."
Finally, I posed the question to the group, "Was there any music that your parents listened to that you liked too? Extra points if it was not approved by your friends."

My dad liked Italian opera mostly the bel canto variety. My mom likes that stuff, but also liked Wagner. I didn't realize until I was in junior high that most peoples parents did not listen to opera.
Most of my friends thing opera is annoying crap.
My kids listen to quite a bit of the same music I do, and they were brought up with The Beatles.
By the way, Andrew, I think the Neil Diamond tune you're referring to is "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show."
I remember my mother singing, Peggy Lee's "Is that All There is" around the house when I was a little dude.
In the years to come, I will be curious to learn what music the 12 year in my household will remember & enjoy.
The first band I discovered on my own would be ELO after seeing the live at Wembley film on HBO around the time 'Out of the Blue' came out. I decided that playing drums with a ton of musicians and then have a UFO come down for a finale would be a cool career. Come to think of it, that would explain why people keep using the word 'orchestral' when describing what my band sounds like. That and my classical music training.
kind of odd for an 8 year old, but I loved it....still do. Later on in high school I got into a little bit of country and most importantly Johnny Cash...which was certainly uncool by nearly everyone's standards at my high school.
I will always thank my parents for being general lovers of music, it has made a big difference in my life.
Megan, I'm sorry he wasn't cool at your high school. That must have been Cash covered, "Hurt" which brought a new generation of "young" Cash fans. I always thought it was interesting that Johnny Cash had fans of all ages, from teens to senior citizens.
Period.
I still listen to those tunes a few times a month (and yes, my friends have been making fun of me since high school because of it) because it reminds me so much of my childhood.
It helps that it's some damn fine folk/bluegrass. :)
I went beyond my parents though.... got into Bebop, Duke, Cool Jazz, then fusion, progressive rock, etc.
Kool 108 was the station my dad listened to throughout my entire life. When I was in my early teens, Kool 108 was all I listened to. My friends were all about the top 40's stations, but I was still stuck in a world that I never existed in.
Still to this day, it is my second favorite station. :)
