THE WITCHING HOUR: Give Your Two Knuts About All Things Harry Potter

It's the final countdown for the arrival of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  We are sending out a howler to all Gather Muggles, witches, warlocks, and villains to join us in the Gather Books Essential (books.gather.com) from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. ET today (Friday) to talk about all things Harry Potter.  So bring your conspiracy theories and speculations on how the series will end!

VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB

And once you're reading the book, we will be hosting a virtual book club in the Gather Books Essential (books.gather.com) for the next week.

Saturday, July 21st   and Sunday, July 22nd from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. ET (books.gather.com)

Monday, July 23rd through Friday, July 27th from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. ET (books.gather.com)

 WIN A BORDERS GIFT CARD

Each day, we will post a Potter trivia question at the end of each Witching Hour article.  If you answer correctly, your name will be put in a random drawing to win a $20 Borders Gift Card.

Jessie Voigts was the lucky winning of yesterday's random drawing.  Congratulations Jessie!

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2007 EDITION OF "THE WITCHING HOUR"

TRIVIA QUESTION: To have the chance to win a $20 Borders gift card in our daily random drawing, you need to pick the correct answer and publish it in the comment thread below any time after 2 p.m. ET.  Good luck!

What is Harry's wand made of?

And to get the Quidditch Golden Snitch in flight, let's kick off the discussion with this……

Will Dumbledore come back to life?

Do you think Harry's parents will make an appearance in the last book?

its made with a pheonix feather inside it, the same thing a lord voldemorts, which is why they connected in the book GoF, the feather came from Faux, Dumblebor's pet, which on occasion has saved Harry by delivering the sorting hat which Harry pulled Godric Gryffendor's sword out of during the CoS.

Wow, I need to dig deeper and find a trivia question that is much harder.

In the meantime, any thoughts on the following questions?

Will Dumbledore come back to life?

Do you think Harry's parents will make an appearance in the last book?

lucky me!! wow!! thank you!!

yes, phoenix feather, the same as voldemort's...

i hope that dumbledore is alive - it seems crazy that he would die the way he did. UNLESS he did it to distract from a possible ultimate purpose by snape...crazy. hope not! sometimes he (dumbledore) drives me crazy, how much MORE advice and help he could give harry and doesn't...

I think that Lilly and James will make another appearance, but only as a memory of others, the last time they did it was when the wands connected... and that was a 'fluke' I don't see that happening again...

Phoenix feather from Fawkes' and the other is in Voldemorts wand.

I don't think Dumbledore will return... but I think he will influence things from the 'other side'.

The same with Harry's parents. I doubt if they'll come back to life but who knows.

Wouldn't it be neat if Voldemort does die, that when he does everyone he's killed over the years would come back to life? Be a neat ending to the story.....

My daughters' and I will be anxiously awaiting midnight tonight at Borders in our local mall... they're both dressing in costumes.

An open question: I'm wondering when you read the books, if you envision the actors in the movies? They are so indelibly married to the characters in my mind that I have a hard time not picturing them as I read. I did not have that problem with the first book because the movie didn't come out until later.

Dumbledore is completely dead(i wish he wasnt), though i believe he has a way to comunicate and guide Harry still. My question is why was dumbledore writing to Aunt Petunia BEFORE he left Harry on his door step? (it says it in JK's FAQ)

Dumbledore is dead. Sirius is dead. Dumbledore was dying before the night on the tower. He however has left information and guidelines for Harry. His sleeping portrait will help the order and Harry and, of course, Headmistress McGonagall

Jennifer... I didn't have that problem, I only read the 1st 3 books after I saw the movie, and was addicted... but now, yes, I see Daniel Radcliff in my head when I think of Harry and would have a serious problem if one of the main characters didn't return... I had a big enough problem with the original Dumbledor died and they HAD to replace him...

and I'm draggin my sister out with me tonight to wait at Borders, were making it a "date" were going to see the newest movie, eat dinner, then go get in line for my book..

Holly and phoenix feathers....Dumbledore should come back to life to help Harry, just as a phoenix comes back to life...if only long enough to save Harry, which kind of answers the Snapes question....Dumbledore has always been saying Snape is ok....I think he used a particular version of a forbidden spell that rendered Dumbledore deathlike as to fool Voldemort....

I think Harry will live. JK said DD was dead and would not be pulling a Gandaulf. So as much as I wish it wasn't so ... BUT IT would be cool if he did. Say he somehow tapped into the power of his pheonix and can somhow be reborn then take an aging potion (premade by Snape: Who is GOOD) and whamo he would be back Younger and better than before. But I am dreaming.

Rowling has also answered a poll question on the Fidelius Charm. (in her FAQ) Will Harry be able to enter the house in Godrics Hollow? Harry was in it as a baby, but does that count as having the location from the secret keeper (wormtail)?

i do see some of the actors when i read the book - snape for sure, and the first actor of dumbledore. most of the other ones, though, i see the images in my mind that i had first. it is hard to change it, your ideas of how people look, in books...

i think that his parents will come back as ghosts or memories or whatever they do, to try to help and save harry...

Sirius should come back, and help Harry if DD can't, But DD should be able to talk to Harry through his portraits and other means. Also JK said The Mirror will come back into play: possibly Sirius telling Harry to get him out from behind the VEIL???

Dumbledore is dead...there's no way to bring him back. Sirus is probably dead, but I'm not quite sure on that one... We don't know enough about the item he fell in to.

Harry's parents are dead also...but what about extended family? Perhaps we will see other relatives of Harry's father...

People were lined up at Barnes and Noble at 9 a.m. this morning. NOw it's raining, so they are all standing out in the rain...he,he,he...I hope it stops before we have to get there and stand in line.

In Boston, they are having a great Harry hoopla in Harvard Square. Restaurants will be open until midnight. They will be showing the latest Potter movie. I'm sure it will be absolutely packed. I'm debating on whether or not to fight the crowds of Muggles although we do have a couple of Harry Potter costumes floating around our Gather offices. Take a look at the fun we had today. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977061822

I think Molly would be the obvious choice to die as she was the most afraid for everyone else. But I hope it isn't her, but I doubt she could take having one of her kids be killed and would rather it was herself than one of them.

one benefit of living in a small town is that the lines are really short. 15 min, max. i'll head there at a few minutes til midnight, and then the line will be gone by the time i get there. ok, so no good restaurants, or places to do fun things, but...;)

I definitely don't think Dumbledore will come back to life. I DO think he will serve some greater purpose though. I would not be surprised if James and Lily made another appearance. What about Sirius? Anyone have any opinions on that?
Haven't made up my mind if Snape is good or not, I think I dislike him too much but I trust Dumbledore!

As far as the actors are concerned, I think I definitely associate the characters with the actors in my head, except some that I don't think look like them. For example, Umbridge is still a very toadlike creature in my head, and Dumbledore doesn't look like that actor in my mind either. (He's not a very good Dumbledore) I am pleased that the casting directors chose such a great cast!

Answer for trivia: The wand is made of holly with a phoenix feather core taken from Fawkes.

I'm afraid I am a bit of a party pooper - no waiting in line, I pre-ordered from Amazon and will get my copy of the book on Saturday morning. I can't wait! I think Dumbledore is dead, but I think there will be some kind of communication from him. After all, he is an extremely powerful and clever wizard AND he has a phoenix as a pet, there has got to be something to that!!!! Also, I hope that I do not hear about the ending before I finish reading the book, it would really spoil the book for me.

Snape probably had some sort of pact/promise to Dumbledore...we know he had one with Malfoy's mother (to protect Malfoy)...Snape had to kill Dumbledore to keep Malfoy from committing murder....Snape did it with Dumbledore's blessing (for lack of a better word)...

Hmmm...killing Ginny Weasley would be the easiest way to "get to" Harry...

I forgot to answer the question: The wand is holly, made from one of only two feathers taken from Fawkes, the phoenix. The other feather is in Lord Voldemorts
wand.

Actually JKR stated on her website that Albus is definitely dead but nothing about Sirius. She also said that two more major people will die and I think it will be Harry and Tom because it is the only way she can stop the series and not let evil win.

Also Harry's wand is 11 in. made of holly with a phoenix feather from Albus' phoenix Fawkes' tail, which is shared with Tom's 13 in. yew wand.

There's something to be said for Snape not killing or hurting Harry when he had the chance, right? How long is this book? How can there be enough pages to answer all our questions and advance the plot? Wow!

My other fave characters are definitely the twins :)

We get wristbands for pre-orders at Barnes and Noble at 6:30 P.M., though if it keeps raining I may go over to Walden Books...it's at the mall and indoors.

favorite character(s)?? Herminone, Hagrid, the twins, and believe it or not, Snape....as creepy as he is....He has to be the way he is to Harry....whatever holds him to Dumbledore, he has made a pact, and in order for Harry to succeed against Voldemort, he has to know his stuff and that's why Snape has been so hard on him...not to mention if he were to show favoritism, then Harry wouldn't get angry and succeed at the commands needed...

jennifer - def chapter by chapter, or maybe section by section. although, you MIGHT have to have 2 threads - one for chapters, and one for the whole book! i am sure when i am all the way done, i am not going to want to talk about the first chapter or 2. i am going to want to talk about the ending!!

My favorite character besides Harry is Dumbledore, although Hermione runs a close second. His wand is made from Holly wood with a phoenix feather core from Fawkes. My 15 year old daughter and I will be going to a Borders store and she is thinking about dressing up. I hope she does It means she's still a little girl at heart, and I'm not ready to let her grow up too quickly.

Harry's wand: Holly & Phoenix feather core

favorite character: the Wisecracking Weasley Wonder Twins.

Some place in the Books, Dumbledore says that evil cannot be totally irradicated, so I'm betting (but not a lot) that Harry survives and he and Ron become Aurors, Hermione becomes headmistress at Hogwarts, Neville becomes Herbology professor, Luna inherits her father's newspaper and discovers all his weird fantastic creatures are based on some grain of truth. And of course in my world, Ginny marries Harry, because she truly is the only one who can handle him and put up with his various moods. She also is (besides Ron & Hermy) the only one who really understands why he has to do what he needs to do to save the wizarding world.

As for how I imagine the characters, I tend to think of them based on Mary Grand Pre's illustrations however I had a friend in college who I thought would have made the perfect Harry right down to his unruly hair and Buddy Holly glasses. My daughter would have made a perfect Hermione before she (my child) cut her hair (and after Hermione had her teeth fixed.)

As soon as I get off work I must rush home to finish my cape since she and I are dressing as witchards. the party tonight is going to be a blast. I have to work Saturday but the minute I get home I'm going to be locking myself in my room with several cans of Zero Vanilla-Coke and peanut butter & crackers and dare anyone to call me. It better be an emergency!
