Hi I just joined this website/forum today. I am looking forward to having the oportunity to share with other readers. As a mom of 4 and a person in educational limbo waiting for the right time to finish my masters I am excited to have joined this community. My kids and I love Harry but I am a biggest fan bigger than the kids. I look forward to chatting about this book and I am so excited about reading my Harry novel.
Thanks,Rho

I'll try to be there, but I'm going to be at work. It's not up to me whether I'm shelving books, organizing journals, or online at any given time.
If I can, I will come!
(Of course, if they have me do journals or something, I could just use my wand to magic them into place, with labels. However, I can't do that if they're watching, so I'll have to be careful.) ;-)

Hee. The answer (for today, the 19th) is The Bloody Baron.

And I hope beyond anything that there will be a true ending. I want all the questions answered and I want to know that Harry will have a happy life. Because so far, he's had a really crappy one, if you think about it. I don't think that she would kill him off, but if she did, I would hope that there is a scene where Harry reunites with all the loved ones he's lost or goes off into the mist ala Lord of the Rings. Whatever happens, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

There's an elephant in the chat room that I simply cannot ignore: the leaked ending. Please, please, can we promise not to introduce that into this conversation? We here at Borders are walking around the halls with our eyes closed and ears plugged. I'm the only one they're allowing out of hiding. And only for this conversation.

well, i am just hoping that snape turns out to be ok. i mean, i can't even READ it now without thinking of alan rickman (one of my favorite actors!)...

i hope also that harry wins over voldemort, and also, that ron and hermione are ok.

side note - do you think people are now naming little girls hermione? crazy...

(Bloody Baron)

Hi, all -

I was a Snape-hater until I reread HBP last week. Now, I'm convinced that he's on the side of good... he kept trying to keep Harry from doing any of the unforgiveable curses (and, in true fantasy style, I'm not convinced that Dumbledore is really dead - though I'll be angry if I snotted up my copy of HBP twice for nothing!).

Even more than seeing Harry take on The Dark Lord, I want a big battle sequence featuring Harry singlehandedly taking down the entire Malfoy family. :)

Is anyone else in the Boston area going to the Harvard Square shindig? They're keeping all the restaurants open until Midnight, when the Harvard Coop's selling copies of the book.

Also Sorceror's Stone is playing at the Brattle 9pm to nearly midnight, for those who want Harry while they wait. But there's a huge street fair planned.

bloody baron...

I don't know if Harry will survive or not...there is merit for the end to go either way...Harry could die when Voldemort dies, just to keep balance in the universe, the whold good/evil, yin/yang bit...but then Harry could survive to prove that good will triumph over evil and I think if he survives, he could very well end up the defense against the dark arts teacher and Hogwarts would become his new home, it's really the only true home he has ever had...anyway, I guess right now it is just wait and see...

and the waiting is very difficult!

i would imagine that no one would ever have had an inkling that their books would be famous, and i think hers is the most, eh? crazy. i feel so happy for her. and hope that her life can slow down (after the next 2 movies) - i can't imagine doing all that AND having 2 little kids. you know?

what i love is that not only are kids reading it, but also reading other classics (i.e., LOTR). my mom's a middle school librarian, and she said that ALL the HP copies are always checked out - and that she's constantly having to replace them, from all the use. i think that is awesome!

shava - you make me wish i was visiting boston!

i would love for draco and lucius to go down. i am so tired of their bully posturing. bleah..

well, not so big doings here. our library is having a party, with books for sale by the local independent bookstore. however, lillie's too young (5) and they say you have to be 8. so, we'll head to our local meijer's (grocery + everything store). i will take the neighbor girl (12), she's so happy that someone can take her, and lillie, too, of course.

the whole next day, sat, i have plans for two lovely adirondack chairs out on the lawn, overlooking the lake. lillie's got a friend to play with all day, and the neighbor girl and i can just lounge and read. we've even got snacks made, healthy ones, and i have my insulated cups out for the iced tea. i am not stirring from that spot!!

unfortunately, sat night, we've committed to going to a local amish fish fry - a fundraiser for a local amish family. we know them, so can't skip out. i will be ready to get back and read!!

I have to say that I'm really sad about this book coming out. It's had a HUGE impact in the world of children's literature (and a pretty big one in my life, too). Knowing that the end of a ten-year chapter of my life is about to close is kind of... geeky-but-sad.

I mean, tomorrow is the last full day that Harry Potter's fate will be questionable. I haven't been able to say that for a third of my life. :S

EB White - It just makes sense to me since he has done so much already, leading Dumbledore's Army and teaching the defense spells, working with Dumbledore in HBP, too many things to not give him the post if he should want it...

My thoughts on Snape are that even if he does turn out to be "good", people will still not trust him and he could conceivably lose his post at Hogwarts. Maybe he will be one of the characters that dies? There are supposed to be at least two main characters that don't survive...

Is there any truth to the rumor that J.K. Rowling is already at work starting a new series? I haven't been to her website in a while to check...if it is true, I wonder what it would be about? and would it be as popular as Harry?

kim - let's have this virtual party, eh?? pull up the adirondack chair. feel the breeze coming off the lake. hear the sounds of families enjoying themselves going by on all their boats (jetskis, pontoon boats, speedboats, kayaks, paddleboats, and fishing boats) and smell the campfires from the neighbors two down. yes, we might have to have a campfire, too. dark chocolate, graham crackers, and toasted coconut marshmallows for our s'mores.

pull up your chair!~

I think that Snape has to be a foe after using one of the unforgivable curses on Dumbledore. I was on the fence about Snape ( I didn't like him but wasn't sure if he was good or bad) until the end of HBP when he killed Dumbledore.

If she is doing another series, I wonder if people would prefer a spin off with one of the Potter characters or something completely original? I vote for the former. There is something very comfortable and warm about the familiarity of a character that you have grown with.

Very comfortable. Please pass the Valrhona bar and the Zingerman's graham crackers. ;-)

EB, this is the close of a very long chapter in your life. I'll bet you can point to rites of passage and tell me which book you were reading, or how your image of the characters changed as you grew up...

The bloody baron (trivia answer).

I'll probably pass on the fanfare of the midnight sales and just casually pick up a copy at the store sometime during the day.

I'm curious to see what happens next in the Potterverse. I know Rowlings hasn't ruled out the possibility of more books, but I would think that a MMO game based based on the elements of the books would be an interesting idea.

Go Harry indeed! It's as if JK tapped into some sort of Arthurian-level mythology, you know? At times, it's hard not to read the series allegorically, but that kills the fun.

How cool to have accomplished something like that in your lifetime.

Quite a woman.

Harvard Square -- I have a date with my fiance, who's a sometimes Harvard Square street performer, for him to take an evening off and make it a date. But we're going to dress for the occasion as a Victorian wizard and his beautiful assistant, even though he's not working the streets that night. I've warned him he will end up doing magic anyway, because he can't say no.

I started reading the books aloud to my son when he didn't read yet, and now he's 14 and will read the book in a day, I'm sure!

I would be curious to know what Rowling's writing process is. Does anyone know? Does she outline everything to the last detail or does she let it flow. I guess you would have to have a lot of it mapped out ahead of time.

It isn't that I don't LIKE Ginny. Ginny is fine. (A big step up from Cho, IMO.) I just think he should be with someone who was known for more than a wicked bat bogey hex. ;)

I always hoped that Harry and Hermione would date. But it looks like she might end up with Ron?

Bloody Baron.

My husband said he thought he'd heard spoilers. I don't want to. Luckily I'm good at closing my ears (and eyes). But please don't put any here.

We've had the book on order for ages. And now my mother in England has it on order for herself. Can't you just see her, nearly 80, walking down the road on Saturday morning to pick it up! She went to the movie this week with one of her friends. My husband and I went with our kids (age 17 and 20; the 22 year old went with his friends at boot camp).

If there is any budding romance that I want to see succeed - it would be Luna and Neville. HOW CUTE WOULD THAT BE? :)

I will be sad to see the series end, but Rowling made it clear from the beginning that there was only supposed to be 7 books...I was ready to quit after HBP when Dumbledore was killed and Harry said he was going to leave Hogwarts...I was sad and angry...but I can't wait to see how it all turns out, she's got me hooked! LOL...the book should be at my door on Saturday...can't wait...

If she really is planning another series, (I couldn't find the info on her website) I don't think I would want it to be the same characters...I think something new would be good, as long as she keeps with the same quality of writing...

Amy - The rumor (big-fat-one) that I heard was that she was planning a book about a girl sleuth. After seven successful books, I'd be willing to go out and buy anything Rowling wrote, new subject or otherwise. She knows characterization - and that is what I love about her!

EB, I totally forgot about Neville. He is such a great character. They all are really, but I guess I sympathize with his incredibly funny stroke of bad luck. The poor guy just can't get it right.

My mom has already said she is going to read the book first...it has kind of become a tradition with us, that she orders it as a birthday present for me and then reads the book before I get hold of it...I think I might take my son to see the movie this weekend...

EB...that sounds interesting...I would definitely take a look at whatever she puts out after enjoying her writing so much...and I think you're right, it is her characterizations that make the books work so well...you feel like they are real and care about what happens to them, like they are your friends...

Linda - LOVE Neville! Funny thing was, Luna was kind of a non-entity for me until I saw the movie of OotP. What an EXCELLENT portrayal! And now, they're my favorite couple-that-isn't. YET.

better late then never and the answer is Peeves is afraid of The Bloody Baron, the ghost I am most curious about ... I just wounder his life story, why Peeves is afraid of him, yes, everyone is afraid of him.
Who was he?
How did he die?
Why is he bloody?
Wasnt his description that he was covered in silver blood? Is it silver because hes a ghost and all the hues we see him as are grey, transparent, and silvery?

fwiw, here's my speculation on how the plot might twist:

If there are such things as "unbreakable vows" then such a vow could serve as a reasonable explanation for the unwavering but otherwise mysterious and perhaps dubious faith Dumbledore has in Snape; that Snape had previously given Dumbledore such an unbreakable vow of loyalty. With that vow in place, Snape's killing of Dumbledore can become a necessary illusion, a false death, and the only change shattering enough to force Harry to break free of Hogwarts in time to pursue Voldemort with his full force and vigor. We can then also imagine Fawkes' phoenix qualities being called upon again to revive his master.

Peeves is afraid of the Bloody Baron.....I am hoping that Harry lives on in this last book....he has successfully thwarted Voldemort all this time...would love to see Snape and father and son Malfoy bite the dust, and Dumbledore come back tp life just like his phoenix-perhaps to save Harry...hmmmm I am curious!

Peeves is afraid of the Bloody Baron. I think that Snape will turn out to be a friend and that when Dumbledore pleaded with him in the last book, he wanted Snape to kill him (reason should be revealed in the last book). Also, I think Wormtail will die trying to protect Harry. It was mentioned in one of the books that if a witch/wizard saves your life, you are bound to them to save theirs.

I really think Ron is not intellectually challenging enough for Hermoine and that Harry would have been a better match for her but, hey, it's Rowling's book not mine. Btw, I bet you anything that Snape and Dumbledore arranged some sort of set up where it only looked like Snape killed him because Snape was a former Voldermort fan...must have denied it because he didn't end up in Azkaban with the others...and now that V-day is here, Snape needs to appear "bad" in Voldermort's eyes so he's not killed off and so Snape can spy on Voldermort's crew. Maybe that's all far-fetched but that's how I would have written it. I like Snape! Another crazy theory would be that Voldermort is the real biological father of Harry Potter, but for some reason, his mother went off with James Potter, hence Voldermort's wrath on the whole family and why he couldn't kill Harry. Those are all the conspiracy theories I can think of for now. Discuss!
