Regret, resentment, shame and fear. These are all the feelings that keep us from reaching our potential, our full potential. Family secrets will still affect the members of the family who don't know anything of them.
Khaled Hosseini, the author, weaves a tale, beautifully told of a boy growing up, making bad decisions and figuring out how to live with them. His past, his pain keep him from fully engaging in life. He describes falling in love and not dating or spending much time with his beloved until the marriage (something almost alien to our western culture).
It's a beautiful book, wonderfully written that tells of man's inhumanity to man and how one man can make one boy's life possible.
It's a satisfying book - a complete book even though the characters' lives aren't finished.
You get the sense of where Afghanistan is located by the cultural influences - some Arabic, some Pakistani, and some Indian.
And... it's coming out as a movie later this year.
And... since you've asked, No I haven't read the new one yet, heck I just got to this one and it came out a few years ago.
