The response from writers to the First Chapters Competition has been overwhelming. Hundreds of great manuscripts have already been posted to the First Chapters group, and aspiring novelists are currently vying for the 20 Round Two spots.

To celebrate the critical role that you, the readers, play in this competition, at the end of Round One, we’ll be rewarding the most insightful commenter on each of the 20 advancing submissions with a $500 Borders gift card! Even better news: you’re not limited to winning just once. If you’re the most thoughtful commenter on all of the top 20, you’ll win a total of $10,000 in Borders gift cards!

To read all current submissions, visit the First Chapters group and click on the "Recent Articles" link directly under the 4 "Featured Articles". You can also view all current submissions by clicking here.

Promotion Details:

  • Deadline: This is a Round One promotion. All comments must be posted by 11:59 PM ET, April 3, 2007 to qualify for review
  • Selection Criteria: At the end of Round One (on or about April 4, 2007), the Gather Editorial Team will select, at its sole discretion, the most thoughtful comment on each of the 20 contest submissions that have been chosen to advance to Round Two
  • Reward: (20) $500 Borders gift cards

Join the First Chapters Competition Group.

I was also planning to enter the competition, but right now I don't have a complete manuscript. But once it's complete, I shall enter. How can I, in the meantime, become a reader with the possibility to earn money for my comments?

No one is paying people to vote on American Idol, and no one's getting paid to vote here, either. Excellent idea, I think.

I'm with Robert N. How to sign up; where to go to access chapters? But I DISAGREE with Janet R. I don't see how readers' comments can "taint" the contest. The whole idea of commenting on writing is definitely in keeping with what goes on at Gather anyway. Are my comments making this less of a "people's choice kind of thing?" If anything, it makes it MORE of a people's choice kind of thing. If there is the possibility of readers receiving a gift simply for making "insightful" comments, what's the big deal?

First Chapters Administrator: Please explain how it is that non-Americans are expressly EXCLUDED from entering their work in the competition but can comment on the American entries only? I do not understand this discrimination in the big event and the complete flip around in the minor event. How do you reconcile this?

I have to say that I am enjoying reading these entries. I'm trying to leave constructive thoughts, mentioning the good, the parts that need work, when I post a comment. I'm trying to comment on some of the stories that may not place in the competition (and some that may, as well), so I'm not Commenting for Dollars.

But man, I thought about it. It's so difficult to write an entire book. And all of these people did - they wrote tens of thousands of (hopefully) connected words, they poured their vision into these electronic machines, they're hoping that we read what they share, hoping we leave a footprint that someone stopped to listen, that someone cares.

How cool is it that we live in such a world? A world filled with all this noisy artistic expression! These things give me great hope for our future.

Interesting? Yes. The offering, however comes at no surprise and the resulting opinions stated herein aren't a surprise either.
I admire the purist(s); All persons should be true to their nature. But we are biological, (Even purists), and not logical. And at times, downright greedy.
Let me not exclude myself from the masses who clamor for recognition. You're out there; you know who you are. That's all that need be said about that.
But what I'm missing here, is the person who says "I love to read." (I do, but am busy writing.)

Now, with the money candle burning, those who are stuck in the revising rut, and can't see a way out for the moment, can come read, comment, and cash in. (At this point, I issue a dismissive sound.)
And why not?

As far as I can comprehend it, twenty gift cards to Borders, each for five hundred dollars, shall be awarded. I fail to see how this will assist someone, Frederick K. and Janet R., who finds him/herself in financial straits in obtaining cash to assist him/her with his/her obligations. He/She cannot win a gift card and exchange it for cash. Any one who thinks he/she shall temporarily satisfy his/her creditors in this fashion may wish to take note of T.J. Tompson's comments. They clearly tell you there is no money in it for you. The card is only valuable because Borders says it is, and I'm certain no one at your utility company will take it in exchange for supplying you with electricity. That person can have all the time in the world to read and submint comments. It will not wn him/her cash, and he/she may notice his/her submissions were not considered to be worthy of a gift card. As well, it is certainly unlikely that any one person will win twenty gift cards. Most people mght realze that American Idol's mindless voters must pay for each telephone call they place, when they cast a vote. Making a submission here won't cost someone seeking a method to make a quick buck anything. For any one who takes pleasure in reading and writing and has a few minutes each day to devote to this competition, it seems like a fabulous offer. At least, no one will find him/herself a victiim of unethical scam artists.

Doesn't sound a fair offer for two reasons. First no cash is being paid nor can it be exchanged for cash. Second, reading and commenting on the first chapters is no simple task. It is rather an arduous task. Therefore all those who submit a reasonably good draft must be compensated by paying atleast $100 in cash.

I personally agree with NRJ & TJT a mere $100 is more suitable than what is in offer,
also although in sports quantity breeds quality but that is not true in the case of writing. Thus some other format has to be earnestly thought of ... Thanks

It says rate this article, so I shall. This article has infomation about what you can win by reading easy to find, but how to sign up and get started is not easy to find. I really enjoy reading and would like to participate. I find I shall have to do a little research on this site to find out how. I rate this article with a 7 because I feel it should be clearer on the information on how to participate in reading. tyvm

One problem I see this morning, is that the most current submissions are getting all the annotations, while those just a few down in the list are getting very few. Much better would be to display the submissions randomly.

At my son's elementary school they awarded the kids with perfect and good attendance last school year with Border's gift cards. My son was thrilled to get a $25 gift card and loved picking out his cat books. This past Dec they did it with Mc Donalds instead and I mentioned to the teacher our disappointment and she relayed that most parents felt the same way.

For anyone who wins the $500 gift cards you can donate some to your local school to be used as an award or incentive for a contest. They are also good to give teachers as year end gifts and to therapists, aides, and other related school professionals.

Also on the other side I believe people buy and sell gift cards on ebay - I know I have done both.

People keep talking about industry professionals reviewing the chapters. Trust me, Simon & Schuster will have folks reading the entries before they decide to publish something. What they are looking for is what appeals to readers. Publishers do have a very good idea of what people like to read, but this is a chance for the public to give them direct feedback, which is a great bonus for them. I would not be surprised if more than one person ends up with a publishing contract if the quality of the submissions are very high.

Thanks to Gather for realizing that you have some great writers AND readers on this site. I can't think of anything better than a Borders card as a reward!

I've been reading many of the entries since before this secondary contest was announced. Although it is a nice incentive and I would be thrilled to death to win $500 to spend in Borders, I want to say that it is not the real reason I am spending as much free time as I can spare to read these entries. I am reading them because I love to read mainstream fiction. I read probably 50 novels a year in the genre, nearly all of which I buy. People like me are who many of these works, once published, are targeted to. So when I read all the negativity from Janet R in these comments, I'm a bit miffed. Janet, what good is the critique of only literary and publishing professionals in all of this if they don't take into consideration what people will actually buy and read? Having comments and ratings from Gather members, who represent the actual book-buying public, makes perfect sense. Don't be so critical.

Okay Janet, I do see where you are coming from and perhaps because I am not entering a manuscript myself, I may not worry about the same things as you are. I did read somewhere from not only the admin for the First Chapters group, but also Tom, where the rating system is filtered. I would *guess* that drive by comments from friends and family would be weighted less than those from established community members. Also comments from single time commenters or those accounts that run through all the entries and vote low would also be either not counted or weighted very low.

Just like Gather in general, I am reasonably sure that some methods for weeding out the legitimate votes are used. Also as an FYI, I am reading the entries from oldest to newest due to the 14 day display period. I would imagine other members are doing the same. So don't worry about some not having a lot of comments yet :)

I entered this contest hoping to get some good feedback from expert readers. I have tracked my rating (only had 7 people so far), so I know that my ratings have been okay (three 6s two 5s and a 4 with three comments). Then suddenly my rating dropped after the 7th rater and I calculated that person had to have rated my story a "1." There was no comment left, no explanation for why he/she hated the story when the other six readers expressed some enthusiasm for it.

Please, raters, don't do a drive-by rating and throw out a 1 without any explanation. My suspicion is that whoever did this to me (and others?) is trying to climb higher in the rankings. Chances are, such a person can't rely on talent alone to win this competition. Don't worry, in the end, the judges will throw out your trash. My story may not be good enough to win, but I won't take others down with me to make myself feel better.

I have had the same thing happen. Everytime I good a pretty good rating and my rating goes up, within an hour or so it drops back down. I have 19 comments, none are negative, I have 34 ratings, almost twice as many as my comments. If I am getting that many "bad" ratiings, don't you think someone would have left a negative comment?
Oh well, I guess thats just how it goes.

Excellent question, John. In order to determine if a story holds together for an entire 70-100k words, the editors would have to read more than the first three chapters. After all, the competition is designed to find a publishable, marketable novel, not just three wonderfully written chapters from a book whose plot falls apart mid-novel.

I wonder if they will have the time or manpower to do so? It will be interesting to see if the editors pick any entries that are not in the top 20-50 rated submissions.

Did you submit an entry? If so, good luck to you!

Tony,

I think they zapped all the "1" ratings. A few hours ago, the top stories were in the mid-6's, now they are in the low-7s. My story went from being a 6.3 with 10 ratings to being a 6.3 with 6 ratings. So they cut four ratings from my story. I think they have detected some voting fraud or drive-by raters who throw out ones to ruin everyone's day. I'm still not in the top 20, but I'm very glad to have honest ratings.

I just re-read my post and realized the math doesn't add up. Since I "lost" four ratings, it's not clear to me how I have the same average rating, unless they cut two 1s and two 10s. So maybe they've removed all 1s and 10s????

I lost two ratings today and my score went up as well. I think there are a lot of people out there who are bombing anyone with a decent rating. I just checked and my rating has gone down again - no comment, just a bad rating - and it was a really bad one, probably a 1. My chapter may not be the end all and be all of modern fiction but I can guarantee it isn't a 1. I think there are people going through the entries and when they find a good rating, they bomb it. It doesn't bode well for a contest when the rating system can't be trusted. It was naive of me to think that people would have integrity. Most of us do but all it takes is a few desperate ones to really muck it up for the rest of us. I really don't think entrants should be allowed to vote. It's too difficult to remain objective when you want the prize.

TJ: A gift card is easily monetized on eBay.

If you trust the editorial board to filter the comments on chapters and make appropriate judgements on the best ones, then the gift card contest can only increase the supply of comments, providing more information for the judges and all of us. More information can only be better.

Strategic blunder?

Hi all,
I decided not to invite friends/family to read my submission b/c I wanted people who have no connection to me to vote honestly on my work. I am also brand new to gather.com so I don't have any allies here to vote favorably for my story. Maybe this is why I only have nine ratings after 10 days? Have I made a huge blunder? Guess I'll find out in the end. Right now, I have a 6.6 rating for "To Uphold and Defend" (posted 1/17 at 6:11 pm). We'll see if it holds up. Now that I've posted this, I'll probably have a few drive-by-raters shoot some 1's at me. Alas.... :)

I think the idea of rewarding the readers of First Chapters is a very good motivation. Initially I was a bit skeptical about the response to the contest and also of the possibility of getting a large number of participants to read the contest entries. The real enthusiasm that followed belies all those doubts. It appears you can never underestimate the power of internet.

Birdie has rightly summed up that emotion, "How cool is it that we live in such a world? A world filled with all this noisy artistic expression! These things give me great hope for our future."

Some questions, however, remain to be answered. First, as Magi pointed out, there is an obvious discrepancy and discrimination in the fact that the non-American Gatherites are excluded from the main contest but are allowed to comment and get rewarded. Secondly, as TJ and others have voiced their concern, it is the practical utility of gift cards vs. cash.

In a democratic world of people's internet it is possible to harness people's voice by placing appropriate riders in order to get a meaningful direction. So, I see no express demerit in picking up a creative work through "people's choice" rather than through "experts' choice".

The possibility of the reward motivation setting in an element of selective mentality, as Leah pointed out, can give a wobbling effect to the contest.

Hey, how about a non fiction contest, life stories? Stories that inspire and travel the road of real world pot holes and hazards?

I like this for myself since I'm not entering, but it definitely seems to make the contest a bit unfair. Ever since it started, I've seen some trends that did not exist before the contest was announced.

You don't need friends, Lynn, all you need is to live in a large city. With some 800 WiFi sites in New York, for instance, a contestant could make the rounds, signing up fake accounts with different ISP addresses, leaving high marks for himself and dropping bombs on the likely competition. And no doubt that's why some commentators are suspicious. Especially when a slew of new members leave brief comments on just one entry, and the contestant says he doesn't know them.

Not that self-aggrandizement is going to do anyone any good in the long run. S&S will pick the winner, and they're not going to pick a book that isn't marketable.

A good indicator is a high percentage of positive votes by users who don't comment on anything else, but that story. They leave 10's and the stories are inflated. I know Gather encouraged it outright but it is what it is.

Good administration so far...This is a heads up and/or a question...Why does one first chapter submittal of 9 February still appear on March 1st?...Thought all entries only lasted for two weeks. Check out THE CURSE of BLETH.. Is this a glitch or intentional on your part to see if we're paying attention?
Thanks for running a great contest.

As for me, I had never heard of Gather before, and it has replaced practically all of my time on online chat, allowing me a whole new privacy which I've been prepared for. And for us to voice our opinions, advice, perhaps out of a whole article, that and connect with people, is unique to this site, and I enjoy it. I've joined groups and made a few groups of my own. All of this was easy to learn, and I see that some people do complain about having difficulty finding material, but I've had no trouble. If you hit the tags menu at the top, you may search images, and I've found some good ones, but at first I didn't know how to search for images. I have a pastel of a moon that I shared.

From here, I can only see that this is a site that will continue to improve, and lately I really feel more at will to set an example.

Since Borders is here, the site is that much more attractive and interesting, and the people here are mostly friendly, not superficial, cynical, rude, obnoxious, uneducated, and trivial as on chat.

I've joined the contest, and I was extremely confident, then nervous because the low ratings brought me to think maybe my work wasn't worth it to some people, and I guess once we get past that, it's okay. Some people were helpful enough that my manuscript overall has become much more than it was, but other people don't have a certain focus to comprehend what they're reading.

My only suggestion would be to provide a guideline for what constitutes a 10, an 8, a 5, a 4, and so on. As an educator I have found over the years that grading and assessing my students' creative efforts is much easier if I develop a list of criteria for the process. That way there's no confusion whatsoever when the grades are handed out. I believe doing this for this contest in the future is a must. Some of the rankings have baffled me as I've read and commented. We, as readers, need to know what the numbers mean so that this can be a more fair assessment. Thanks!

Here are the (de facto) guidelines:
10-my friend's entry
9-my friend's entry, but don't want to be too obvious
1-might beat my friend's entry
2-might beat my friend's entry, but worried that 1s might get tossed

It is very inconsiderate to give anyone a 1 or a 2 without making a comment. Only one of us will win this competition, but all of us can become better writers IF those who hate us will tell us why. Praise makes us feel good, but honest criticism makes us better. If you hate something enough to give it a 1 or 2, your should certainly be able to point out somthing that could be improved.

In resonse to Janet R, the second rating on my first chapter came from someone who was a friend of a fellow contestant, who voted a 1 on mine in support of him. From there my entry didn't get much attention, and half of the comments were my own in response to what anyone would say. I couldn't get any of my family to come onto the site, and most of my friends didn't respond to my emails which were invitations. I agree, many of the new contestants have much more attention given to their submissions, and much more respect. I had ratings from people who didn't even read much of my entry, nor did they assimilate to whatever they did get to read. So my overall rating was very poor even though my entry was good. I've enjoyed the rest of the site besides that, but where some of the recent good entries get more attention and are at a higher rating, I don't see the comments are fair. I'd have contestants come to my entry and basically feel offended by the quality of my work, so they would tend to undermine any of it in that interpretation, where they couldn't get into the groove of the work enough to understand it. They just saw it as an offense to them and may have brought people in support of them to read my work and rate it low, or read it and complain about minor issues, which only showed that they also couldn't get into it. They just saw it to be competitive, whereas there were Gather members who did like the work and didn't know why it was at the rating it was at. So my entry was at times like some after party trash like at a football game with the opposing team leaving trash all over.

(I don't see that the comments on mine are fair.)

Anyway, half of the people enjoyed my entry, which is why it was somewhere around 5 or 6. Most of the people I didn't know, and some I was able to connect with through Gather. If I were to move on to the next round, I would still try to get some of my friends and family to join Gather, but I really don't have enough people of my own to come in and read it for the first time, as others do. And I would expect the same effect in the next round, where people just can't get into my work, or undermine the whole entry based on one thing they didn't like.

i think the idea is good but the problem is trying to make it fair.
i'm like Susan O. i'm new too and don't have any allies yet. so i could use a few people passing by too. if anyone is interested in giving comments, my novel is 'Ramblings of mad man' located at http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976922213. i've gotten a few good suggestion and a few fly by 1's that didn't leave any comments. i think that if you hate something bad enough to give it a 1 then you should at least tell the author why you hated that badly.
hey Susan O. i'm going to go try to find your entry right now.

Hello all,

There have been so many entries that I feel as if mine has gotten lost in the mass, hence this bit of (semi-shamelessly) self promotion. I've gotten two comments, both from people I know, and while I'm extremely pleased to know my friends and family like the book, their opinions are . . . well, suspect. :-)

And, since getting opinions on my work is one of the reasons I entered this contest, I would very much like to get honest feedback from people who don't love me.

So, if you're interested, you can find the first chapter of my fantasy novel A Sign in Blood at the following link.

My entry in your first chapters contest was messed up by whoever set it up.

1. They gave it the wrong title.
In the synopsis it is clearly stated

SYNOPSIS

The Eleventh Hour
By
my name next and then the synopsis.

So why was it named In the Beginning of the Christion Era

2. Note how you spelled Christian.
3. My first paragraph is totally messed up in a double space format when it was sent in a single space.
This is totally unacceptable and unfair. My entry had three strikes against to from the jump.
I am not saying it would have won or even gotten past the first round but it would have been nice to see the correct title in big letters. Has it is, it is an abomination and I wish and beg you to remove it from your competition.

It has been violated and I feel I have been. I have deleted everything from my gather page with the exception of a group I started and that's only because I don't know how to end that group.

If I knew your contest would have such disregard for their entrants I would never subject myself to enter as it is Gather treated my work like parents that tell their children you will never amount to anything, your worthless and an accident. I'm sorry if this note takes any of your time. Your administration certainly killed mine.

If my assassinated child wasn't still up there for gather to leer and jeer at I would have already left this group. Please remove my entry and don't bother trying to make it right. You didn't bother in the first place.

The drivebys spoiled this contest. I had about six or seven ones left by these people everytime my score started to raise...started out with a 10 and they knocked me down to a 5 something...then it slowly raised back up to a 6. Very bad experience leaving those people score your work. Not Fair...And I think gather will do nothing...

It truly is a shame that the driveby mentality is tainting this contest. Maybe I am naive but I still believe the vast majority of entering authors and commenting readers have integrity. Most of the comments that I have been receiving for my first chapter have been insightful and helpful and because I am so appreciative of this, I am reading other chapters, giving high rates when deserved, and offering up the most constructive comments I can think of. We all have a lot to learn and a lot to offer.

I suppose there will always be flaws in these internet contests. What is mainly important to me is receiving constructive feedback, however, I wish there was a way for me to point out that the first chapter, is simply the first chapter. As the book goes on, more things are revealed and more answers arrive, but it would be boring for me to reveal too much in the very first chapter of my book. That's the way I feel about it anyway. I love getting the feedback and I am definitely looking to improve upon myself. If the "drivebys" end up shooting me down, it won't stop me from persuing a career in writing. I agree with Rebecca, we all have a lot to learn. I hope I can help others as they are helping me with my writing! Good luck to everyone!

I don't know how Gather actually does it, but I think they have ways of dealing with the 'drive-bys'. What I wonder is how you get people to read your entry without inviting them. I just sent invitations to a few people whose comments sounded fair and reasoned. I see some entries have been looked at by 90 people and some with only 2. I think the more exposure the better, so getting your title out there seems like a good idea. My entry is Finding Veronica. I hope people will read it. If people post their titles, I'll read them.
Good luck to all.

If I plan to write my first chapter in a novel, maybe I would introduce the major characters in a scene where some conversations will give a hint about the whole of the novel. The background would also indicate the social class that they belong. Actually not much could be written in a first chapter for a novel. If the first chapter is too long, much have already been said. Anyway if it is a novel that runs the story of two to three generations that must be a long novel.

Let me state up front that I do not have an entry in this contest. I've been reading and rating since January.

From what I've been reading, it seems that the biggest complaint from first chapter submitters is that entrants and their friends are down-rating other entrants. So it seems to me that this should really have been separate, parallel contests, with some different rules.

1. If you have an entry, you can comment, but not rate, other entries.
2. If you have no entry, you can both review and rate. Enforce a rule that no rating is accepted without a comment.

And as far as I'm concerned, if there's a prize being offered, a third contest should have been created, called "Rate the Reviewer", where only first chapter entrants get to vote, and rate the readers. This would be a much better reflection on who actually provided useful feedback, rather than who happened to have a comment on a highly rated entry.

I mean, this comment thread IS about the readers, right?

I just did what Jiminy Cricket sang about. "Let your conscious be your guide". Eveyone seemed to have their own set of rules. I just made sure I understood the submission requirements, and based my ratings on how well the chapter met those requirements. I did not take into account whether or not I liked the genre, whether or not I agreed with what the author was saying, or whether or not I would normally buy that book. I just kept asking myself, "Is it ready for publication? Would it would be generally appealing in the market?". That kind of stuff. For some additional ideas on how folks arrived at ratings, see the comments on Dale C,'s article, 'What I know now that I wish I had known then", posted here: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976935695.

Here is a brief synopsis:

In Low California, Arthur seeks importance, greatness, and to be somebody's number one. At twenty-six, Arthur is out of work, 3,000 miles from home, whose only friend, Teresa, he treats poorly. However, his life changes when he becomes obsessed with a high school girl whom he mistakes for being someone his age. Arthur befriends Bina, a beautiful and talented musician, much to the dismay of his only friend, the not nearly as beautiful Teresa, who finds Arthur's friendship with Bina creepy. When Bina's mother dies, Arthur realizes that in the face of such a tragedy, he will never be as important. Instead of comforting Bina, he convinces himself that her mother hasn't died. For her part, Bina is in denial over her mother's death and convinces herself that her mom just ran away. Arthur comes to the rescue when he kidnaps Bina from school and they head down to Mexico. For good measure, he also kidnaps Calvin, a four year old who is always willing to offer Arthur moral support. Together they begin their quest to find Bina's dead mother in Mexico. Selfishly, Arthur begins his own quest to become important and great, and, finally, to be somebody's number one.

I had a similiar experience with my novel, STRANGERS ON MORTAL SHORES, first chapter not being formatted correctly. It had no paragraph breaks. Wow! talk about hard to read.

And when they did fix it, it was incorrectly fixed with without indentation and some of the paragraph breaks not spaced at all, so you really can't read it well.

I think it is literally impossible to be fair with this format. No one person can read them all, and some are missed that are probably quite good works.

My novel is available on line, so people can read my whole book, but who would if it were lost in the scuffle?

And as to the first chapter, can you read the next ones if you are drawn in? I can't find it.

I think a novel needs to be read in entirety, if it is possible, and you should make the next two chapters at least available to interested readers.

I suggest a remake of the contest with 200 or so entries for two or three weeks all year long, if necessary. It would make for readers who could enjoy, and writers who could be read.

And then the contest should have monitors. Right now, I feel that the people who said mean things were probably contestants who wanted their works to be voted up high, by voting others down. Mean spirited competition has ruined your contest.
