Whether you choose to start your own book club, sign your child up for the reading program at your local library, or subscribe to an online children's book club, the benefits of children reading during the summer is invaluable.
- Encourages reading on a daily basis.-Kids who have a variety of reading materials available to them are more likely to read, especially if the materials are geared toward their specific interests.
- Promotes family togetherness -You and your family can spend time reading together. This is a great hobby that everyone can enjoy. Let each member of the family choose his or her own book or article. Then family members can share what they have read and their thoughts on the book or article with each other.
- Provides insight into your child's true thoughts
Signing your children up with a kids book club is a great way to encourage reading! Book clubs typically provide a variety of books and book recommendations that will help inspire a love of reading in your kids.
- Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. http://www.bookadventure.org/registration.asp
- Scholastic has an free online reading club for children where they log 4 books and then Scholastic donates one to a child in need. Called the Summer Reading Buzz: http://www.scholastic.com/summerreading/index.asp

Barnes & Noble's annual summer reading program for children kicks off. Kids in grades 1 through 6 can participate in a scavenger hunt, new word creation and summer reading giveaway. Through the program, kids read any eight books, list and record their favorite parts of the book in their "Summer Reading with Andrew Clements" journals. Completed journals will receive a coupon for a free book and are entered to win an autographed copy of an Andrew Clements book. Kids use the Summer Reading Journal to tell their favorite part of each book. A parent/guardian signs it when it's complete. Then bring their completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 29th & September 2nd, 2008.

Yesterday NPR had a small segment on the 826 program. I looked it up on line. Looks like a great program. Has anyone had any experience with this program?
I printed this out and plan for my 9 yr old to take part in several of these. Thanks so much for getting the information out there!
Years ago, when my sister was still in grade school, she didn't like to read. We had our own family summer reading contest, and she always won!
He will sign up for Summer Reading at the library on Monday, though, and we just got him a Butterfly Treehouse (the summer reading theme is BUGS so this fits perfectly!)
The public library where I live has a summer reading program for both kids and adults. For the kids, every time they go into the library they get to pick a prize. Every 10 hours that they read they get to pick a bigger prize and they get entered into a drawing at the end of the summer for bigger prizes (bike, gift cards and more). For the adults, every 10 hours that they read they get entered into a drawing at the end of the summer (gift certificates to restaurants, stores, etc.) My kids and I have done it for several years now and it is a really good summer reading program.
Thanks for the nice comments on my photos
