It's a fantasy book for teens (probably for girls considering the style d the protagonist being an almost 14 year old girl).
The setting is almost San Francisco- probably people living there will recognize more landmarks that I could. I wasn't quite sure until the Presidio was mentioned, then places like Califa, Califa bay, etc. fell into place.
The story is of a girl who is trying the best she can, but doesn't feel like following the family's traditions.
Her mother is strong, her father has fallen into weakness. There is an alternative universe that can be entered and exited from. There, as usual for a young adult book, messages such as be true to yourself, take care of yourself, keep your friends by your side... that sort.
It was a lovely book to read.
