Book Review: Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock

 Fiction is my passion, but really good, gripping fiction is hard to come by.  I don't mean action adventure; not my style.  Give me a story about real, fleshed-out people, not flat characters.  Let me see their struggle as clearly as I see my own.  Relationships have always fascinated me and drawn me into the story.

What to say about Caroline-Scary Carrie, as her classmates call her.  An eight year old, dealing with heartbreak and tauma in the best way she can.  A not-quite-helpless child, abandoned to torment by her mother, trying to keep out of the way of her violent and angry step-father; trying to protect her little sister, Emma.

And yet, who is Caroline and more importantly who exactly is Emma the unloved, Emma who saw their father shot dead, Emma who has drawn the unwanted attention of Richard their step-father?

This is a skillfully written story by a bestselling author.  Her voice is transparent, yet strong, as she leads you just a pace or two behind two little girls who hold out against the worst life has to offer them.
