I'm currently reading Prep A Novel by Curtis Sittenfield (sp?), and have to say that I'm enjoying it immensely. It is the girlie version of "Catcher In The Rye" - but much longer and with a more modern setting. Plus, so far anyway, it's not so darn depressing.
What's more is the fact that the author has really gotten into the head of a real teenage girl. I can recall having the same exact feelings and emotions, reactions and avoidance as the protagonist. It's a hoot! It takes place at Ault, an East Coast boarding school (coed), where a young girl enters as a freshman and is automatically an outsider because of her midwestern roots and her scholarship. However, most of the detachment is her own doing as she tries to fit in by not fitting in. Parts are sad and horribly painful while others are downright hilarious.
I hear the last few chapters are the most interesting and possibly most disturbing, so I'll have to get back to you when I've finished it.
