Dance of the Pink Flamingo
©2009 Robert Burnham
(a Kids' Zoo page)
Last night I dreamed of a Pink Flamingo
With a long, long neck and skinny legs
I asked her where she had come from
She looked at me and said 'The Everglades"
She told me that her name was 'Hilda'
And she could only stay a little while
She wanted to say hi to all the children
And see if she could make them smile
She brought with her, her cousin Michael
Sister Lulu and old Brother Tom
In fa
ct she brought many more Flamingoes
And they all danced across my lawn
You can dance like a Pink Flamingo
Just stand on one leg and shake your head
Flap your arms like they were feathers
And at night fly off to bed.

The Flamingo:
Have you ever seen a flamingo?
If you haven't seen a real one you may have seen a fake plastic one. A lot of people like to keep plastic flamingoes as lawn ornaments. There are five species of flamingoes: Andean, Chilean, James, Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo.
The most common flamingo is the 'Lesser Flamingo' of Africa and Asia and grows to be about 2 ½ feet high and weighs about 5 pounds. The flamingos of Florida, Mexico, and Latin America are called the 'Greater Flamingo' or 'Caribbean Flamingo'. The Greater Flamingo can grow as tall as 4 ½ feet and weigh up to 8 pounds. The Greater Flamingo is the only flamingo found naturally in the United States with most of them living in South Florida. Finally, the Chilean, Andean and James Flamingoes live high up in the mountains of South America near saltwater lakes.
Flamingoes are unique because they like to live in salty water that is found in marshes and swamps because that is where they find the shrimp and other small aquatic animals that they eat but they cannot drink the salty water so they have to travel to nearby freshwater everyday. They use their beaks to catch their food and to filter out any saltwater before eating. It is the flamingo's diet that makes its feathers pink. The color comes from natural dyes, called pigments, in the food that they eat. Scientists discovered this curious fact after flamingoes in a zoo were given a different diet then what they normally eat and their feathers turned white!
Flamingoes are often seen in flocks of 1000 or more birds, standing on one leg and preening themselves by using their long necks and beaks. But they do fly. The Greater Flamingo's wingspan is almost 5 1/2 feet. They can fly approximately 370 miles non-stop at an average speed of 37 miles per hour. They prefer to fly during the day, in cloudless skies and at very high distances above the earth. Flamingoes fly like this because they are not very agile flyers. They cannot dip and turn suddenly like smaller birds so if they didn't fly high or if they flew at night, they would make easy targets for birds of prey.
There are many flamingoes in zoos and in the wild. They are not endangered and should be around for our enjoyment for a very long time.

I love flamingos. I have a couple in my kitchen. Of course not real ones...
Hi Amber, thanks for stopping by. I walked among the flamingoes and was actually able to touch a couple of them (briefly).
Robert that would have been so much fun!
Anyone can get close to the animals, you just need to jump the fence, climb in the cage, cross the moat - y'know whatever it takes for a photo.
Got caught in the leopard cage in Austin. I was asked to leave for the rest of the day. So, it does have its downside. lol.
Thanks for posting this to our kodakmoment group. Great essay.
Wonderful photos
Well done. Lovely photos.

Great photos to accompany the poem. Nice touch using pink for the words.
They are such beautiful birds. My birthday is the 29th and I told Eric I want to take James to the zoo for my birthday since he has never been to one. Looks like we are going in less something comes up.
Renee Have a wonderful outing on your birthday!!!!

Thanks for sharing! beautiful pics and nice writting. :)
I don't like pink however these photos are nice. Very good writing and photography.
My friend here enjoyed your poem and information. He wants to know if James Flamingo is related to his cousin Harpo? :)
Thats funny Cathi!
Hee-hee Cathi. Will I get in too much trouble if I say your 'friend' looks better than your hubby. Ooh, I didn't just say that did I?
Yeah, well, at least my hubby didn't shoot an elephant in his pajamas! :P
lots of shrimp...
I love flamingos...
I'll see about getting a couple live ones for your castle m'lady.
Wonderful photos
I love flamingos
I have a Christmas flamingo (Santa cap, etc.).
I heard where flamingoes gather, Don Johnson follows?
When I lived in Florida a house had some black and white spotted (fake) flamingos. They called them Dalmingos!!!
Ha... that's funny.
But no Don Johnson sightings?
I think Don's over on the island waiting for the Miami Vice/Smuggler's Blues Island Tale edition. He's sipping magaritas and asking the cowboy fella for tips on being 'cool' and dressing fashionably.
Oh, I thought that was Izzy Moreno you gave your fashion tips to.

((( All I can think of to say is .....Wow! Beautiful poem and incredibly sharp photo's! )))
((( I just thought of something funny...imagine if we turned the colors of what we eat...since I love chocolate..guess what color I'd be...funny ha )))
Beautiful photos and poem.

I truly think that flamingoes are such lovely creatures!
Great poem Robert, buddy.
Thanks Angela, it does my heart good to see 'you' dressed more brightly.
Thankies dear. I missed reading everyone's stuff. And, I got tired of crying.
My mother in law would wish for me to be happy and embrace life. I have a goal of being a writer. And, that's what I'm doing.
Love the poem and the article was very informative.
Great, Robert. Thanks.
thanks!
The poem is great! The pictures are nice but I think the children will love the poem and info about them. This coming from your sis that teaches 1st and 2nd grade.
Great piece to go with the rest.
And I've been telling everyone you teach THIRD grade. See how little I pay attention.
Thank you Robert. They are beautiful birds
We, always, make it a point to stop and see the flamingoes at the zoo!! I love them!!
BTW, nice poem!!
What a cute poem, the young'ins will love it! You are just full of useful info! I really liked how, with the poem, you added the info, that is cool, no wonder you got all those A's!!!! Your sister, can probably use the zoo stories for her class, does she, do you Randi? I think I would have liked learning that way in school, instead of just memorizing things, and always writing the same sentence 100 times, I will not chew gum in Mrs Goldbergs english class, I will not chew gum in Mrs Goldbergs english class.... LOL
Oh, they're so gorgeous, a present from God. Thanks for the info and all the beautiful photos. Love the poem, too.

Looks like they like your kids pages Robert!!!!!!!!!
By the way, Thanks for posting to my group, Anythingwriting
Yep--you're in 'da south' now Robert---where many people are never aware that all pink flamingoes AREN"T plastic lawn ornaments .
But on a sweet note--- a year or so back, one of our prominent and respected townsmen here developed cancer ( from which he eventually died.) And I don't know how the thing got started-- but well-wishers and donators would 'sneak' into his yard and place a personal pink flamingo in his yard to denote either their financial or any other support. needless to say his yard was FULL of plastic pink flamingoes. And the well-wishes of many people who loved him.// Your georgia friend---Lonnie
THAT could only happen in the SOUTH Lonnie.
I might be getting a little southern. Instead of looking for work, I spent the day lounging in the middle of a Georgian river, just below a dam. Watching the birds fly and kayakers come by and listend to Streaker imitate her wolf sisters. I have photographic proof but that's for tomorrow.
Wonderful Work!!
Still looking for my monkeys...
The problem with the monkeys dear heart is most of the zoos have them behind glass now and the tend toi elevate up into the vegation which makes for great glare and poor images. Next Thursday I am going to Zoo Atlanta. Never been there, we'll see if I can't find a way into the monkey pad. Just for you.
This is truly beautiful; not only the poem but the photos themselves are so pretty, Absolutely a great essay
Thanks for all the great information, the wonderfully fun poem and the fantastic pictures. I've been close to flamingos before too. They are great birds. Thanks for sharing and peace.
I haven't seen a live one in decades. I have missed them.
Your poetry, pictures and essay really should be experienced with a child beside you. (Much more enjoyable that way.)
brother-mine, brother-mine: always a pleasure stopping in.
the poem made me want to illustrate a children's book around it. (i've been hired to do one, but the subject's not flamingoes...unfortunately, i now believe...) -they're a charming mixture of awkwardness and beauty. like Lyle Lovett, or some such.
Lol thanks for that story, i bet that was a werid dream to have. I love it. =D
