I love bluebirds. They have the prettiest markings than any other bird, in my opinion. Their blue color is magnificent. I have to say that the red cardinal has always been my all-time favorite, but so far, I haven't seen any cardinals around here. So, for now, I am enjoying my bluebirds.
I put my first bluebird house up on a Wednesday, and on the following Thursday morning, I discovered a male and female visiting. I have watched them for days now, going in and out of the house. It is the neatest experience. And who would have guessed they would find the house so soon?
The male will let the female go in first, as he waits, patiently on the fence. She comes out, and he goes in. I suppose they are busy making a nice little home for the babies they plan to have.
Now I just have to try and keep the sparrows away.
***UPDATE***
New sparrow-resistant bird house. We will see how this works!

Here are a few of the pictures I have taken... so far.

Carol, The difference in the bluebird house, it doesn't have the little perch that most houses have, this is to keep other birds away so the babies will have a better chance of survival. And ideally, you need to place them facing the east, and place them 500 feet apart, if you have more than one.
Also Carol, the hole on the bluebird house is smaller and the house itself is deeper, for the babies, I assume.

I enjoy watching Bluebirds too.
Having discharged my duty as Party Pooper of Gather, those are some cool shots! I've only had one bluebird drop by - none have stayed. But some enterprising critter actually widened the 'door' of my bluebird house. Can't wait to find out who's living there now!
Sarah, I had the same thing happen,it was a darn squirrel .he just knawed it badly, and chose not to live there.
John, It will be worth the time to get one up, but it sounds like you know that already.
Ruth, Thank you so much, you always make me smile. :)
Chris, The cardinals have always caught my eye as well. However, since moving here, I have seen not one cardinal. So, I have to focus on what mother nature brings to my door.
Good to see all of you!!
Good to see you Cindy.

Thanks!!! :)
Blue birds, wow - I'd love to have a blue bird nest in my garden. I wonder if there are blue birds in Florida?
Rose, Check out this website...

Thanks, Carol.:) I checked it out - I'll have to read up on it some more, but I'll put up a bird house as soon as I figure out the best place for it.
They like their privacy and like pine needles and loose grass around for their nest. I always put a little in for them when I put up the house to get them started.

The house I just purchased does not have the round hole, it's the "Sparrow Resistant" one. We will see if it works. So far I have a male and female in and out busily getting it ready.
One more site to share...

Carol, have you got a photo or a site for a pix of the sparrow resistant house.
Yes Phil....look up at my 5/21 comment to Rose.
Phil, I just added a photo to the article of the sparrow-resistant bird house.
Thank you ,Carol.
You are most welcome Phil. So far the new house is working for me. The sparrows are staying out of it.
I plan to do another article on the sparrow-resistant house in the next few days. Stay tuned!!!
I like bluebirds too. There color is fantastic. I tried to take some photos of one in the birdbath, but Thade scared him off before I could grab the camera. Maybe some other time....until then, I can enjoy your photos.
Thanks Renda! It takes time and patience when you are photographing wildlife, but it is so worth it. :)
It is funny you should mention that. I have gotten some beautiful shots in the past of hummingbirds and it did take a lot of time and patience. However, when I was waiting for them...it did not seem like that long. I did not realize how long I was actually out there and how much time was spent photographing them until I came back in and looked at the clock. As you say....well worth it.
Yes, we have to stop and take time to smell the roses, as they say. Life is too short not to.
That's so true. We had some bird houses much like yours on mounted on the privacy fence. Unfortunately, the squirrels have managed to take them over and gnawed what was the small opening into a huge gaping hole. We may try to mount some more...this time though I think we need to do it on a pole like you have here.
What beautiful birds!
Thanks Sherrie.
Those are great pictures!!!!
