It's Spring... and in honor of Earth Day, I want to share some of the photos I took around New York while we were there last week.
Cherry trees are in bloom everywhere as backdrops, enhancing statuaries..

They bloom in front of skyscrapers

There are spring blossoms around street curbs

And buildings

Not just blossoms, other things abound all over New York in the Spring ---
like Sidewalk Vendors

Tricycles!

Museum Banners

Where there are banners, you will find school buses
With good weather comes the sights of construction

Street Performers

Mimes

And... TOURISTS!
(Duckieone, in the daffodils in front of the Ellis Island Statue of Liberty National Museum.)

Have a Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Loved your photo essay as I have never been to New York!

Jennifer, sounds like you need to go back too! From what I saw, rooftops are now sporting more gardens than pools. You should see the amazing rooftop gardens with full grown trees... it pleases the environmentalist in me.
I can't wait to see the rest of your vacation, Ducks!
Happy Earth Day!
One of the first things I did when we got off the cruise ship and while waiting for our taxi that would take us to our hotel was to buy a New York hot dog from one of the street vendors. I gotta say it tasted wonderful after all the gourmet food offered onboard... what a great introduction to New York!
The NYC Ducks vehicle being in the same picture was a happy coincidence, honest. If we had more time, we probably would have used that tour company besides the ubiquitous Gray Line we used. Their tours sounded like fun! They offer a half-bus half-boat amphibious experience with an exciting multimedia component.
Wow... I was close by and never suspected... You could have been one of the people I met walking around! :-)
We saw the "statues" too last September. Should I assume you didn't get on the Liberty Island boat either? Or are there more pics to come?
Beautiful photos.

Madame D. nice to see you back! I believe you had just returned from Hawaii when I left... where did your itchy feet take you this time?
===
Aniko, if you are asking if we visited the Statue of Liberty, no we didn't. We just went straight to the close by Ellis Island where the National Museum was. My husband and I agreed that the Museum would offer more rewards than the tourist-crowded Liberty Island. We got lots of pictures of Lady Liberty from the cruise ship when we docked and also from our watertaxi which actually touched on Liberty Island to let off a horde of tourists first.

Bonnie, thanks!

Janet, thank you!

===
Bethann, thank you!
===
Bent, thanks for your kind words.
===
John, if I had friends in Long Island, I'd find all kinds of excuses to visit them regularly :-)
===
Madame D... maybe those sparks will send you towards my path someday... with a luggage full of your special goodies.
===
Katherine, thanks for stopping by my part of the planet!
===
I hope you find Manhattan as great as I left it, Rosalee. Any stories you hear about a bug-eyed tourist who was blue from the cold but kept clicking away with her camera while sporting a big grin is to be taken as a new Urban Legend, ok?
SIX months? I hope you had a great time in Mexico!
===
Bob, that is exactly what I felt. There is so much I wanted to see and do, yet. I definitely MUST go back!
===
Flit, just fly there with me... we'd have a ball!
===
CC... those roof gardens are truly amazing and such a great idea. Gardening as close to heaven as possible.
If you get a chance to see South Pacific on Broadway please do. My nephew Grady is in it.
Great photo essay.
===
Janet, I would have loved to have seen more Broadway Shows but we were there for only three days. We only saw "Chicago".
I am now back in Illinois. Where it's snowing today! :-(
===
April... wow, that's a BIG train!
===
Janet, thanks for the news and for coming back here. :-)

Tonia, it was amazing luck that we saw New York in the spring. With spring blossoms everywhere, people were happier I think... not the abrasive and unconcerned New Yorkers that we hear about. I think they were all pleased to be seeing winter finally loosening its grip. They were helpful and nice to tourists!
My husband and I found that the New Yorkers we met were more sophisticated and better dressed than us but they were as down to earth and kind as people in the Midwest :-) Cold to "strangers"? Nope.
As an example, for dinner one night, we were drawn into conversation by a couple of guys in the next table, one the owner of an upscale boutique (he gave me his card) and the other a successful business owner. Both were amazed at the dinner that was served to me (stuffed breast of lamb... it was a Lebanese restaurant) and started conversation about food in that restaurant, which was one of their favorite "secret places" in New York... meaning it has not hit the fad circuit yet, I assumed. They both had European accents and quite engaging. They gave us a lot of tips and information on how to better enjoy our stay in New York. Now, would you call them "cold New Yorkers?" We were blessed with such encounters. From the bellboys, to the taxi drivers and local business people, we were treated well. I LOVE NEW YORK! :-)
I take the train into NY about twice a month, and I each time I always see something that I thought that never would.
You're lucky to be close enough to go that often. I promise myself I'd go back around the Christmas holidays to soak the excitement of another season there.
I am just getting back into Gather after my long absence. What a great photo essay. I am so happy that you loved New York. It is one of my favorite places. I can't wait to go back again.
When my sisters and I visited Ellis Island, it was a really emotional experience for me. My Lebanese grandmother entered the U.S. via Ellis Island. We sat on one of those old benches and my Sito could possibly have sat in the very same space. She was 16 and alone when she came. How terrifying it must have been. I could visualize the immigration officers checking each person to see if they were sick and turning back those that were. I wonder if anyone met her in New York or if she had to make her way to Michigan alone.
We took the double-decker bus tour too. What fun! New York is sooooo coooool! I will check more of your articles to see if you wrote more about it.
I need to find time later to find more articles from you and my other connections! The gardening season is cutting into my Gather time.
