In September, I enrolled in a Creative Photography class at the DeCordova Museum. My instructor is a professional photographer who spends half of her time in Boston teaching (April - Oct) and then spends the rest of the year teaching in AZ. What a gig!
She explained the relationship between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed all within the first two classes and how manipulating each one can affect your picture. I've been reading several books on photography and for anyone who is eager to learn, I've found "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson to be the most helpful. It's chock full of amazing photos which helps to emphasize the points he tries to relay and helps a visual learner like myself.
Below are some of the photos taken for some of my themed classes. The first class was motion:

The second class was on light and depth of field:

The third (and my favorite) class was on portraits and lighting:

My next assignment is night photography. Should be fun!

jr, It is tiring to work all day (at home with kids or at a company) then attend a three hour class at night. I was lucky that I could use a scholarship through work for a free class at the DeCordova, and I wanted to take advantage of that. My boys are all high school/college age so it makes it a bit easier. The right time will come. In the mean time, keep shooting!
Cheryl, Bob, Faith, and Jessie-I need to catch up with you all and will visit your articles soon if I haven't already.
Great article
I'll look into Understanding Exposure.
