In terms of viewing an opportunity in a problem I would like to offer my two pence worth in regard to Chernobyl. As a consequence of the high volume radiation leeks from their infamous nuclear power station in the late eighties every form of life, be it plant or animal has been infected within its surroundings.
One would look at the lands and waters in close proximity to this radioactive region and see waste ground deemed inadequate for man or beast.
However I view things differently. I see this as a bastion of progress and innovation. While many see a destitute pit of life strangling clay causing altering growth patterns on any creature that survives such an atmosphere, I see a cradle of remedy and correction for some newer global problems if this is nurtured in the right manner.
I propose to develop some of these unwanted lands into highly productive farms. How others don’t see this location as gem in a goldmine is beyond me.
This is quite suitable for the breeding of bovine livestock. My critics will claim the radioactive reaction with the cattle will deem them to develop extra limbs and other body parts. This is the very reason why the excess beef works in favour of attaining more profit. Six legged cows and oversized bulls means extra beef quantity to sell in the market than an average farmer would have at his disposal from a standard animal in any other country. The only challenge this leaves me is to find a country with such lax consumer rights regulations thus allowing me sell this to a willing consumer base.
Furthermore, the issue of energy saving is such a hot topic in much of today’s world.
This is where the lakes surrounding Chernobyl come to our aid. By maintaining and accumulating the radioactive fish content in these lakes means we could conceal them in fish tanks and use these glow in the dark radioactive fish for lighting our sitting-rooms. Never mind energy-saving light bulbs, this will cost nothing. Thus method is both economical and energy saving. We could call them glowfish bulbs. No family home need be left in the dark again. So we are being both ethical and industrious. Everybody is a winner.
Let us no longer speak pessimistically about this area and meet our obstacles head on. Such challenges put off the contemporary but excite the opportunist who is seeking within for that hidden potential.
Lets pool ideas together and energise economically depressed areas.
