Now, I'm ready to start on mine, well, sort of. I still haven't gotten a journal, but that doesnt mean that I still can't start on it, right? *grin*
Remember how I said I had a box similar to Gideon's filled with things to use on/in the journal? Well, here you'll see just what is inside of that box among other things.
This is a shot peering into the overstuffed box.

Let's take some of that stuff out for a closer look, shall we?
My colored pencils and unopened oil pastels (no they are not new I've had them for years!) Along with 4 pairs of decorative scissors and a nice ribbon that was once my grandmother's.

Here we see some postcards, some gift wrap ribbon, laces (from my grandmother), confetti and die cuts. There's also some ornate ribbon on the bottom there from my grandmother.

A closer look at those two ornate ribbons. Surely something special must be done with them. :)

Stickers! Yes, I'm a sticker fan, lol.

This is a neat little thing. You make them and fold them up like this and you can paste it into a book and open it up for images/messages. Kinda neat. Maybe I'll make some for the journal.. who knows.

A couple photos as well as a photo holder that was given to me from my gramma years ago. The one photo is a red panda from the Bronx zoo years ago and the other is the raven outside of Edgar Allen Poe's Philly home. What better inspiration than from the man who created the genre I write? Panda photo by my mother.

Another photo of that adorable panda (I'm a panda lover through and through!) and that photo holder opened. At one time it had an old photo in it, but I don't know where it went to. Panda photo by my mother.

A box of magazine cut-outs that need to be cut around and trimmed before use.

More stickers! (What you thought that was all I had, lol) Gideon has a nice collection too! :) I want to use that camera sticker in Gideon's journal on the intro page for his photography.

Gold glitter glue and Beads! We have a beading store here in town and I'd often go for miniature supplies. Perhaps they can find a use in the journal? We'll see. For now they are here in case I do find a use for them here. Pretty, aren't they?

Ribbons! Lots of ribbons for use in the journal for borders or whatever else tickles my fancy. Also a cute Garfield picture of him writing in his diary. I had kept it years ago because I like Garfield, but now it fits so well. :) Also here: Buttons, die cuts and a mini frame.

Here's something that Renéhas been asking to see. Here you go Rene! My resource books that I've been looking through lately for the journal idea. I've edited the shot to remove the library name on the two library books.
The titles are: Spirtual Journaling: Writing Your Way to Independence by Julie Tallard Johnson, The Decorated Page: Journals, Scrapbooks and albums Made Simply Beautiful by Gwen Diehn and Handlettering for Decorative Artists by Jackie O'Keefe.
I bought the Spiratual Journaling one on a whim in the same town that the author is from. :)

Here's a few page spreads from Spirtual Journaling: Writing Your Way to Independence. It's more of a teen geared novel, but it works for all ages.
Recognizing The Language Of Your Soul spread.

Nature's Peace: Finding the Self through Nature spread.

Getting in the Flow of Writing and Life spread.

There's also a great travel journal section that sounds like it'd be fun to do on the long trip to NY on the train.
This is a particularly beautiful spread from The Decorated Page: Journals, Scrapbooks and albums Made Simply Beautiful. I really liked the drawing and layout on the left side.

Another resource book: Zen In The Art Of Writing by Ray Bradbury (Essays on Creativity.) This was highly recommended by a friend ( Dominique "Rubber Ducky" D) and it's a wonderful read. I still need to grab some quotes and such from it (as well as On Writing by Stephen King.. another great read) for possible inclusion in the journal.

One last thing to leave you to mull over. My notes (rather messy notes at that) of quotes that I liked and will/may include in the journal somewhere. Be inspired! *Grin* There are more that need to be added, but here's a few for thought.

I might not have my journal, but I sure do have a lot here to work with, don't I? Stay tuned for the next progress update. :)
Sorry if this loads slow due to all the photos. I didn't realize quite how many there were!

I feel just like Sandra. I've already started my Art Journal in my head. I always have artistic and creative thoughts that run through my mind, and then I have a little journal to jot them down ~ like I do my DREAMS.
I LOVE ALL THE QUOTES you have in your NOTES Jen, but I particularly like these two ~
"If I fall asleep with a pen in my hand, don't remove it ~ I might be WRITING in my DREAMS" ~ D. Pace [rene remix] ~ lol ~ Is the first name "Denzae?" and . . .
"Keep a diary and one day it will keep you." ~ Mae West
Emma's got good eyes! She spotted something that I missed . . . let me look again ~ just a minute . . .
I SEE it now! My eyes had went straight to the pastels and colored pencils and the gift-wrap ribbon and laces from your grandmother.
There is so much to SEE here Jen. I want to look at this frame by frame. The photos came out very well. Digital camera?
Several things jump out at me ~ First, as we had talked about, the pastels! I have unused pastels (brand new) like you -- it doesn't matter how long they've been put away ~ they've never been used! (L O L ) -- so I can really relate to having a PROJECT jump out at you out of nowhere perfect for those precious things and materials that you've layed aside for later use.
Knowing you Jen, you have a lot more art supplies that you really need to work with for this ART JOURNAL COLLABORATION PROJECT somewhere in the house (lol).
I also honed in on the book by Ray Bradbury ~ I started to get this book a while back, and what had stopped me was a pile of other art books I wanted and bought. So I said I'd get the Bradbury book later . . . and I had completely forgotten about it until NOW. Do tell us about it Jen!
I agree with J.K. to a certain extent ~ Jen . . . don't forget to include your WRITING. You are an excellent Writer. But I don't think that you could ever use up time in a negative sense when it comes to creativity. The ARTS speak in whatever form. Art Journals are Visual and Literal ~ We're working on both. Getting back to the details of our ART JOURNAL COLLABORATION PROJECT -- J.K., we'll be discussing the WRITING aspect of our Art Journals. We are also doing Art Diaries. The WRITING aspect (for some) flows freely after the VISUAL aspect has been laid in place. Then the WRITING springs forth like a spring ~ naturally, of course (lol).
This is a wonderful project for children. Art Journals are magnets for kids ~ especially because of the Visual aspects.
I'll be back with more commentary Jen. I want to study your tools. I absolutely LOVE every one of your QUOTES. Each one speaks to me, and should speak to every ARTIST.
How BEAUTIFUL Jen! I'm sure you'll receive a HUGE RESPONSE to this!
Your Friend,
Rene
Emma, it is. Those photos are really pretty, aren't they?
JK no worries there. The writing comes first, but I'm actually planning to incorporate it into the journal as well.. or at least that's the plan. You know those fun ups and downs articles would work well here, lol. I have a lot of those, too.
Ahh yes the Spongebob fabric. I was going to make a sheet out of it, but I haven't gotten around to hemming it. Gideon has a Spongebob bedroom set and I sewed him a pillowcase a while back.
Rene, I have been thinking of jotting the random plots down here as well as in the plot book as well as those silly things we do when the muses strike at the oddest times, lol!
The Bradbury book is really good. It's obviously more geared toward the writing life, but it's quite inspirational and a worthwhile read.
I'd never forget the writing. I'd venture to say I'm a writer more than an artist, but that's just because I feel writing is more my strength than art. I plan to try to incorporate both into this. Maybe add some snippets with illustrations when I'm away from home or wherever the mood strikes. (It's usually in the car, lol!)
Yes, you are right about it being a magnet for kids. Gideon hasn't seen the finished book yet, but he's been adding pictures to it on a fairly regular basis.
There are some great quotes out there. I still need to collect more, but those are what I have at the moment. It's a good start, I think.
Yes, I thought the pastels would jump out at you, lol. They are taunting us, you know that, right? Come work with me, let me out, LOL!
Rene, you have NO idea how many more things I have here that I can use in this journal. I horde art supplies... and I have stacks of scrapbook papers here.. I didn't include them in this essay though. Yes, there's a lot more from where this all came from.
Looks like you are on your way!
Linda ~ I think everyone in here should all go over to Jen's Place -- what do you think? I'll get the JAVA!
Donna ~ come on now . . . you've got to join in!
Shannon ~ We're coming to visit you too (smile)
Jen ~ The Writing -- the PLOT BOOK is an excellent idea. I didn't think of that.
I'll get The Bradbury Book because I trust that you have an excellent mind (wink). If you say it is good, then I know it is GOOD. (seriously),
WE'LL be focusing much more on the WRITING aspects of our Art Journals so that those who really love to write will really be able to experience the JOY of artistic journaling.
Jen you are really helping us all by laying everything out. It keeps us all flowing.
Thank you for being a good friend. And, although you have been so humble in here, I'm going to have to tell everyone about all of the gifted and talented venues you have created ~ won't take 'no' for an answer ~ smile.
Loving what you're bringing to share with us all Jen!
Your Friend ~
Rene
Linda you can come over anytime. Don't mind the mess. Gideon redecorates often! *wink*
Donna, it is.
Thank you Shannon!
Yes, do put the pastels on the list. Am I disqualified for starting on mine already? LOL. I have 2 more art boards here, so I still can work some up with the collaboration.
Yes, sometimes plots come to me full of images. I could easily see using drawings and cut outs for illustrations for these plots.
I think you would like the Bradbury book. It's certainly food for thought.
Yes the writing part. *smile*
Rene, I was hoping in laying it all out some would see stuff they have in their home and think to pull that aside for their journal.
Rene, you are welcomed. Thank YOU for being a good friend. *sheepish grin* I can't persuade you to take no for an answer?
