This is a special day for everyone at Gather.
Today, Gather is proud to present the long-awaited Writing Essential! writing.gather.com is a place for writers to congregate, publish original work, receive constructive criticism, and share experiences surrounding the craft of writing. This Gather Writing Essential will host a dynamic and ever changing array of content and is unique from any other Essential on the site. This is an Essential completely dedicated to the art and science of writing original works.
Each day of the week, a Gather member will be “Member Editor” and will feature work in the Writing Essential based on the quality of writing and possible themes. These Member Editors come from diverse writing backgrounds, so one day you may find poetry as the featured theme. Another day, it might be personal memoirs. The next day, it could be a mix of the best writing from across all genres.
You will find familiar faces, discover new talent, and make good friends who share your passion in the Gather Writing Essential. We encourage you to publish your works of fiction (poetry, prose, plays, screenplays) and nonfiction (memoirs, interviews with other writers and published authors, and questions about the craft of writing and the pursuit of publishing) to the group. We look forward to reading your work and hearing about your experiences as a working writer. Welcome to Gather’s virtual writing workshop… writing.gather.com.

This indeed is excellent news for the writers of the Gather community!
Currently it appears that the new 'Writing Essential' is not given the same level of exposure on the home page as the other 9 channels (The group is not listed under "Gather Essentials: Recent Features" as well as the primary "A Featured Article in..." display). This 'essentially' keeps featured content of the group off of the home page, unless it is included by the editorial team to 'A Featured Conversation in...".
Do you you have an idea of when this will change?
Also, the Member Editors will determine what content is featured, but do they also moderate content pending approval to the group?
And, are there any submission guidelines for the new group? Since 'writing' can be fairly subjective, I can envision some issues surrounding what 'makes the cut' and what doesn't.
Thank You!
I sure want to be a part of this group.
Jerry R.
I hope all the writers here on Gather join.
As Kevin V. noted, the Writing Essential is not part of the slide-show on the main page of Gather. We wanted to launch the group as quickly as possible. To add another group to the slide-show function would require a major technical rebuild and take weeks, if not months. The Writing Essential is part of the left hand navigation beneath the Essential Icon on the main page.
The other question was if the Member Editors moderate as well as feature content to the Writing Essential... the answer is yes!
And, as far as submission guidelines go... content will be accepted into the group so long as it is on topic as outlined in the group description.
To Jerry R., lyrics would be a welcomed addition to the Writing Essential!
Sounds like much too little way too late.
As this site gets rolling, I will indeed post some song lyrics. Not all song lyrics look right with their clothes (music) off, though.
Jerry R
1) At the end of a story, the writer would ask a set of questions, based on the story.
2) Readers who answer the questions correctly, would get some bonus gather points, which would be added to his total tally of points.
3) Readers who comment, would also be given some fixed points. The writer will not be given any points for his comments.
4) The writer will be given fixed points for each story, along with bonus points, based on a weighted average of the points earned by the readers through their comments and the answers to the questions.
Not too surprisingly, I guess, Gather has a consumerist bent when it comes to how it is focused, and things are designed in such a way to increase our awareness more of what we can have. As someone who offers my creativity and craft here, I often feel kind of "drowned out" in all the more "serious" stuff...
