The "hate" crime bill that has passed in congress. Is this to include hate speech, that is to silence preachers that speak out against alternate life styles?
Ms. Tish? In a word, to answer your question: No. This is not a bill to silence ministers from speaking out against gays. The extreme right wing religious nutcases would have you believe that, and they are indeed preaching that lie from their pulpits.
I took the time to read the bill. It's not all that long. It covers only crimes committed that include the use of a gun or a knife and in which grievous bodily harm is done to the victim. It also has a very carefully worded section that clearly exempts from the law anything that is said in church in the pursuit of preaching their faith. So unless these ministers are intending to go out and badly beat up, shoot, or knife a gay guy or incite others to do the same, they will not come under this law. Simply preaching morality and bibilcal admonitions cannot trigger this act.
Good job, CG. Hate doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, though. We went to the Moon almost 38 years ago, but we're still stuck in a quagmire of hate. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

It was a local "Talk" show on radio. The hate jockey has been saying the most outrageous lies. The hate spinner said that a student was expelled from a local Jr. High school because he refused to salute the Mexican flag. A gullible nut case called and demanded to know which school it was so that he could "confront" them. The Hate jockey backpedaled a little "They're not doing it any more" But he would admit he was lying. The nut job was furious" I did not spend 20 years in uniform defending my country blah,blah..." On a further note, I have been asked to speak to the Idaho Commission on Human rights about my findings. We have been monitoring and recording the local hate radio.
Imus is Mr. Rogers compared to our local hater who frequently talk in spanish accents demanding welfare or in African American accents threatening white folks. They have called Latinos rats.

This bill is a good thing, a start. Hate will likely not go away too soon, as it is fueled by the ignorant and misinformed, most of the propagators of hate and hate crimes.
The bill may have passed the house but Bush will never sign it into law, and the bill doesn't have enough support to over ride a veto.

Any time someone has to be protected against free speech is a very sad day indeed. As the same groups which champion this bill fall on the rights of free speech like a sword they are trying very hard to take it away from others.
There is a connection. I remember during the Martin Luther King days there were many preachers who spoke on their pulpits about how the races should never mix, etc. etc. It was hate speech and had no place in a house of God but there it was. Consider that before you go about the business of speaking out against hate speech. It leads to violence. There were many a white man who felt excused if he beat up a black man because of what he heard in church. In today's society people have forgotten.
JPorter you are correct hate will never go away until religion goes away. Nicely put, It is nice to see that someone else has some clarity to understand that. That is my whole premise. Please see my chat about No Religion and join in. Religion is not good for this world at this time and should be examined. Religion puts people against people and no one has the right answer. I would like to debate the person who thinks they have. Religion has been the start of most wars and still has a hold on today, when we finally lose that grip we may start to become a more complete an understanding society.
