Each month I alert you that two of my favorite online publications are well - "online"! And this is the alert for September.
While The Shine Journal and joyful! present some of the very best creative work to the world, they are decidely different, highly selective, publications:
The Shine Journal, publishes flash fiction (1000 words or fewer), poetry, art and photgraphy. Each year there is an AIR- or artist in residence. This year it is the esteemed Alison Watt Jackson whose black and white photographs are nothing short of exqusite.
joyful! shares with the world, works with a spiritual, christian and/or positive and motivational focus. Like The Shine Journal, joyful! receives a large amount of really excellent work. It strives to be clean but not stuffy, open but not offensive and thoughtful and not judgemental. The word count is higher but, like The Shine Journal, looks down on gratuitous violence, profanity and etc.
Both are modest paying markets. Turnaround time is @ four to six weeks because I read every submission; taking care with peoples' work takes time. Payments are made @ four weeks after publicaton.
Many creatives have gotten their start at one of these publications as I always read or view the work first and decide. THEN I read your biographical data. I compliment you on your "pedigree" but being previously published has no bearing on whether your work is accepted or not!
Both publications accept simultaneous submissions and previously published work. That's because I believe creatives' works need to be seen by as wide and audience as possible.
Both sites are always seeking non-fiction works. The Shine Journal hosts a free flash fiction contest and free poetry contest every year. And each pays well. I am thinking of a contest for joyful! also.
So-please take a look at the sites and enjoy /support the creative works there. I know that like me, the authors, poets, artists and photographers will appreciate your support. And consider submitting your work. I promise it will receive fair minded and thoughtful attention. (All I ask is that you pay close attention to the guidelines before submitting.)
Best,
