Not so much a book as a graphic novel, it's nonetheless an interesting read.
Yorrick (his father was a literature professor) is a young, unemployed, broke escape artist living in New York. His girlfriend is on a study expedition in Australia. His mother is a member of Congress. His sister, Hero, is a paramedic. Yorrick has recently adopted a monkey, whom he named Ampersand. He's volunteered to train the monkey to be a service animal for quadraplegics.
Across the world, a woman known as Alter is a frustrated combat soldier. Although she's actively seeking combat, all she finds are Palestinians throwing rocks at her, and annoying cable news crews.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Lebanon, Agent 355 is trying to refugee a doctor who has a mysterious stone idol that she wears as a necklace. The two women argue about the relative danger of staying in Lebanon, and the supposed curse of the necklace. The doctor doesn't put much store in curses, but believes strongly in tradition. Her father told her not to take the idol out of the country, and she won't.
Back in the States, a pregnant woman - who's also a renowned biologist - shows up at a hospital in full labor. She's six weeks early, and is apparently carrying her own clone.
The countdown continues...
Quite suddenly, and all at once, men begin bleeding from various orifices and fall down dead. All but Yorrick and Ampersand. This is just the beginning.
Y is a series of 20 stories. It will be interesting to see where it ends up.
