I left the house without a book, so bought this at the thrift shop before coming home. I read it on the bus, then at home until I finished it - less than 200 pages and completely enthralling (to me).
The main character is an Argentinean mathematician studying temporarily at Oxford. The author is an Argentinean mathematician... Hmmm.
Shortly after he arrives, his landlady is killed. He and a math professor who knew the victim start to try to solve the crime. There is a LOT of math in the book. There are symbols, series, allusions.
The story comes full circle, so to speak (the first symbol is a circle).
It is reviewed by the NY Times as a "scholarly whodunit". I agree. It probably had a limited audience, but I for one, am glad I found it.
