A lotus thrives placidly
On contempt of the rotting pond
Bloated with decaying leaves
Still water blackened quartz.
The foul environ augmented with
Popping bubbles of odious methane
Can’t inhibit this regal flower
Retaining its magnificence.
Spiders skid on the glazed surface
Other insects hum bizarre tunes
Dappled sunlight plays hide and seek
Through awning of twining boughs
Scent of the lotus dispassionate
Perfumes the fetid air.
What majesty is this? What this reserve?
This complacent attribute
Unperturbed by abominable sewage
Dispensing gratitude?
An infatuated bee, inquisitively
On visiting this dignitary
Is rewarded with gold on the wings
And a chin pollen heavy.
A monarch enthroned aloof
In myriad hues of loneliness
This blossom of serene splendour
Making a statement.

Is it true that the lotus became symbolic for attaining enlightenment because it rises up out of the mud and muck of life---like a jewel? Your wonderful article would seem to support that thought.
what an apt title for this magnificent flower! A flower that rises above the world around it and bewitches the on-looker. Regal poem, Vinay.
The cycle, with its contrasts fully displayed, is done with your usual demonstration of poetic skill in blossoming new senses to things otherwise familiar. I do miss the spaces, though.
Apryl - dear friend, you are very perceptive. Thank you for emphasizing the thought behind these lines.
Umar - your tutelage has been a cycle of development in itself. Thank you, for your support and I'm making the amendments you missed.
A lotus can rise above a murky pond.
A lotus can be multi-layered, revealing levels of beauty.
Why can't our souls do that?
That is what your poem asks. A question that shoild be asked.
I truly value your support.
I also like Natalie's comment about the lotus being symbolic for attaining enlightenment...sounds good to me!
