So, how did you do that? I'd like you to choose one photo that you are very proud of and write a post on how you did it. Explain it as if you were speaking to someone who has never done anything like it before. (We'll appreciate that, since some of us are just starting and need it explained as simply as possible - like me!) I'd like you to include the following:
- Your camera type and settings you used. It would be really helpful to explain the setting and why you chose it for this specific shot.
- Distance, lighting and arrangement if you manipulated any of these, including moving away from a light source to increase detail or choosing another angle for the best visually appealing shot or a unique angle.
- If you have them, please include other shots that were less desirable.
- Any photo editing software you used to crop or otherwise alter your photo. Try to explain the process as best as you can remember.
- Before and after shots would also be helpful for edited shots.
So that's about it! For you humble photographers who pump out amazing shots month after month and others just trying this out, don't feel intimidated. If I've learned anything its that everyone has something to teach us, has seen an artistic angle we've missed or learned a creative twist through "play" that other's don't yet know about. I'd love to learn more about photography and art and have noticed that members here have that desire as well. Let's help each other and appreciate our fellow Gatherer's work in a new light.
Some of the same rules will apply to this challenge as in past months:
- Should have an artistic quality that you would appreciate seeing at a museum.
- Altered and unaltered photos will be accepted.
- Please include your photographic and editing processes so that we can learn from your experience.
- It may or may not be your own interpretation of a classical artwork, but not a downloaded original.
- Tag your posts with "How"
- You can combine your entries with current themes from other groups.
This competition will run from June 1, 2009 to June 30, 2009. You can post ahead of time as long as you tag it appropriately. We will be judging completely by poll. If you would like your entry to be included at the start of the poll, please have your most artistic, on theme post submitted before the last week of the month, June 21st.
Rose has a wonderful example here:TO EDIT or NOT TO EDIT - for Canela C. and you by Rose H.

Me too Kimber! This should be fun!
Denise - THANK YOU:) I just started playing with my photos so I can't wait to see how the pros and my fellow - try as you go - gather photo artists go about their edits.
Your welcome, Rose! I was so excited to see your post while I was in the process of creating mine! Great minds, huh? :D
Mine it total random half the time I dont know how I got it that way lol, this will be fun to watch
We'll love to see your process, Angela! Keeping a notepad by my computer helps me keep track as I play!
Sounds like lots of fun but none of my photos are museum worthy!!!!!!!!! LOL
LOL! So humble, Phyllis! I've seen your photos. They're as fabulous as you are!
Interesting challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing these entries and learning something new.
Me too, Kay! Can't wait to see what you have for us!
Very interesting, this should help me improve my skills. There are so many good photographers here on gather that I can learn from.
I'm looking forward to improving my skills too. I can't wait to see what you can teach us!
This competition is way too detailed for my photo taking habits. I don't pay attention to half the things you're asking, lol.
LOL! So good, you don't pay attention to your process! Like a cook who doesn't know measurements! Maybe this project will show you just how much you know!
hmmmm can't wait to see what comes out of this challenge especially from GaryL ... he has been helping me learn a few tricks along the way!
He's been helping me too, Katherine! Isn't he a great guy! I'd love to see what you come up with as well!
Great idea. One of these days I will get caught up so I can take the time to participate.
Awe, Sherrie, you've had a lot going on lately. I'm so happy for your new success. Bask in the glow of it. We'll be here when you get back! (Though I'd love to pick your brain for photo ideas as well. I just love the photo essays you put together.) Best of luck in your endeavours!
Thanks for understanding, Denise. My step-son is graduating from high school next week, so now there has been a flurry of activities and a gradation party surrounding that event. Just never seems to quiet down! But it is a fun time, too. I'll get there one of these days.
What an exciting time, Sherrie! Congratulatons on his accomplishment, and what a proud moment for you too. Enjoy the moment, and don't forget your camera! ;)
I have a few that might be fun to share the info on.
That would be awesome, Mark! You have some beautiful works!
I'm thinking on this. I may do a photo essay with photos after each step.
That would be very educational, Diva! Thank you!

In the spirit of Mary Anne Flynn's article, I challenge all members to post creative, detailed critiques of our art here. (Preferably more than 2 words.) I love that we have a group of creative artists and am looking forward to the great conversations we'll have about art, photography, and editing!
