This month's artistic competition is: Art Deco Shapes
Following are examples to draw inspiration from or to create your own interpretation of. It can be a still life:

...a portrait:

...a landscape:

...or abstract cubism:

...or any other genre you like as long as you have edited the photo to show the general shape of things.
Rules:
- Should have an artistic quality that you would appreciate seeing at a museum.
- Only altered photos for this competition.
- Please include your photographic and editing processes so that we can learn from your experience.
- It may or may not be your own interpretation of a classical artwork (from the original Art Deco of the 20's or 30's or the revived Art Deco work of the 60's), but not a downloaded original.
- Tag your entries with "Shapes"
This competition will run from May 1, 2009 to May 31, 2009. They will be accepted ahead of time as long as they are properly tagged. Since this is a learning group, if any of you GatherVeterans ;) would like to share your photo editing techniques here, they would be appreciated also.
This is the first month we will be judging completely by poll. If you would like your entry to be included at the start of the poll, please have your most artistic, most visually appealing, on theme photo submitted before the last week of the month, May 24th.
I'm looking forward to seeing your creative entries!

The cubist cuts the shapes and moves them around in random order on the page. They paved the way for the impressionists.
So any photo that you can edit into this form and that expresses something in photograph form will be accepted too.
I need to learn more about that. Thanks for the ping, Denise.
I'm confused. Can we make our own art from altered photos of our own?
Honestly I don't know much about it either, just what I found on the internet! :D It looks kind of like impressionism and was the beginning of that movement. I think as long as you take squares of your photo, move them around on your photograph and arrange it in a visually appealing way, you can't go wrong! If you'd like, you could research more information on it to help you be more comfortable in your creation. You could even share what you find in a post to help us out too! Thank you for putting so much thought into your entries. The time and care will show in your work!
The Art Deco Shapes or Cubism challenge would require you to photo graph something that the general shape is visible. Or you could change the photo in a software where you use paint or other techniques to fill in the object so only general shapes are apparent and add some interest with whatever effects you find visually appealing. Add whatever effects give your art a painting feel.
Then if you'd like to take it a step further, for Cubism, you can take squares of your photo and move them around your picture until its appealing to you. Adding final touches on the fine details will make it a good photo. If you have any further questions, feel free to message me any time. Best of luck with your creations!
Love your examples!
