Here is a link to MSNBC's video explaining Walmart's reasoning for advising its employees to vote Republican. The issue is that Obama wants to make it easier for unions to get into businesses like Walmart. Walmart explains that this would result in layoffs and higher prices.
Obama wants to raise taxes on oil companies as well and pass a windfall profit tax. By doing so, the oil companies will raise their prices.
I think this is the basis of the Democratic party's problem. They want to raise taxes and therefore, raise the cost of the very people, the poor, they want to help. It's a catch 22.
Anyway, here is a link to the video and it demonstrates the difference between the Republican fiscal policy and the Democratic fiscal policy. You decide.

Whan I was it the Teamsters it was the same.
I did loose a job one time because of a political bumper sticker. I worked for Union Oil Co at the time, in Oregon.
Wal Mart should be careful what they wish for. Some real Republicans might get in and WalMart's favorite importer might loose their "favorite nation" statis and some Trade agreements could get cancelled. Of course that will not happen as long as the One Worlder Neo Cons of either party are in charge.
Often, many will sign a card to allow a union vote because it is out in the open for all to see, but when voting comes along they vote against it because there is a secret ballot. There is a move to do away with the secret ballot in union voting, and have it in the open. Many are against this, including businesses such as Wal Mart, because undue pressure to vote a certain way may influence the vote because it is all in the open. People would be afraid to vote against one...
I read something about this some time ago, but have forgotten the details.
As for Walmart - they may have passed over the gray area into outright violation of the law. Corporations may talk politics with their salaried employees, but not the hourly wage ones. They may have assumed that all of the managers and supervisors in their meetings were salaried, but they weren't. Some of the department supervisors are paid by the hour. They should have checked with their own personnel department before having these meetings.
Now, how can we possibly convince everyone to do the right thing and not shop there? Come on, people, we can do better than this! NO excuses.
strategy. The problem is that they need to either go public, or
the company should be grabbed and nationalized under the
anti-trust laws. Walmart is a monpoly, and threatens the
security of the nation when it can do things like threaten
people about how to vote, and scare them into not organizing.
chilling effect on employees freedom of speech right.
Good point Bruce. I pretty much despise Wal-Mart...but think about this. What would happen to our economy if they were to go under? Not only would Wal-Mart associates loose their jobs, but it's quite possible that many of their vendors would go down with them since Wal-Mart is no doubt their largest customer...so more American jobs lost. Then there is the negative impact it would have on local communities....the stock market...the banking and mortgage industries. It's endless actually.
Looks like Wal-Mart owns the economy. I worked for them for 15 years( 1978-1992/ 1995 ) and I never thought that the company would ever become the monster that they are. It's a shame really.
I wonder what Sam Walton would think about what the company has become?
Walmart will do anything to keep the Unions out.
My point is not that they are terrible, it is that they are very intelligent and they provide a service - they also provide a monopoly on the means of distribution of products.
The add value to that distribution, but like any monoploy there are ugly scenes and abuses.
That book tells a great story, pointing out the good and the bad.
Personally, I think there should be some solution to the means of distribution of products being in one, private hand in the whole US.
Like the Interstate highway system of transportation, the public should have some control or ownership in this valuable strategic resource. How to do that in a fair way I do not know. But Sam Walton has real vision, but his heirs will spend billions to milk the American people for all they are worth now that the system is in place.
GO WALMART, Yeah Boy!
I'll have to check that one out Bruce
".But Sam Walton has real vision, but his heirs will spend billions to milk the American people for all they are worth now that the system is in place. "
I met Sam Walton on several different occasions. I even gave him a ride to the airport once. My personal impression of him was that he was a fake....driving around in an old Ford pickup..wearing a baseball cap...all in attempt to make himself appear to be one of the good ole boys.
When I worked for that company, those of us in store management used to carry a card that was Sam Walton's creed. One of the lines on that card read " Dominate every category in every market ". They have no doubt achieved that..but sadly at the expense of a lot of mom and pop stores in towns and cities across our Nation that couldn't compete. But like you stated, they do pass along a great value to the customer as a result. Sort of a catch 22 situation if you will.
"Personally, I think there should be some solution to the means of distribution of products being in one, private hand in the whole US."
My boss ( ex Wal-Mart manager also ) were discussing this the other day and we pretty much came to the conclusion that Wal-Mart's vendors are the company's bitches. If they drop one vendor, that vendor could possibly go under since Wal-Mart is most likely their number one customer...and a huge one at that.
With that said, I would rather they said "Do not vcote democratic nor republican" because both sides of this are full of something very dark and smelly.
