| Adding images to comments can be a fun way to express yourself and your personality. However, images provided by hosting services like Photobucket, MySpace Graphics etc. are often very large and can lead to increased load/display time for comments...especially for members with slower internet connections. Occasionally a smaller version of the image may be desired and can be just as effective in conveying your message. You can easily reduce the size of any image pasted into comments by making a simple change before posting. How is this done? Here is a sample image URL or web address used to display an image in comments:
The above is the web address you paste into the comment box. The image then displays when you post the comment.
To change the size of this image, you simply need to tell Gather how wide you want the image to be. You do this by adding a short width command, width= For example, width=250 will display the image with a width of 250 pixels, which is about 3/4 of the width of the comment box. You can easily add this command at several locations within the image URL. To illustrate:
or That's all there is to it!
Tomorrow's Tip ...using images in your Gather image gallery!

| | "I would like to make a 'clickable' link in my article to direct members to my new group. Can I do this easily, and if so, how is it done?" Creating a link in your article is very easy to do, and can be a great way to connect members to other content on Gather, like your new group. Outlined below is the method to use when creating links to other articles, images or groups. This will also allow you to create links to other websites outside of Gather, like Wikipedia, Yahoo, etc.
Please note though that this only applies to the creation of links within articles. Creating links from comments or mail messages requires a different technique. - Copy the URL (web address) of the group you want to link TO (this will appear in your browser's address bar). For example, the URL for the SiteWizard group is:
http://www.sitewizard.gather.com
- Begin editing, or creating your article.
- Highlight the word, phrase, or image in the body of the article that you want to make into the link.
- Click the 'link' button on the article editor toolbar (it appears as a small section of steel chain).
- A small link window will appear.
- Paste the URL you copied in step #1 into the new window, in the Link URL field.
- Click 'Insert'.
You have now made a link! | |

I agree that the first 'category' should be listed or indicated somewhere. I thought that the "Featured" menu item on the "Articles" tab listed these articles, along with all articles featured within the Essentials. However I will need to do some testing to verify this.
Thanks for the input!
Here's the feature I'd like to have: I want to have and easy way to add emoticons, especially a flirty one that bats her eyelashes at you! ;-) <-This one just doesn't cut it!
Good Morning Yvette! I have mixed feelings about emoticons. If used sparingly (like for special people like you), then it can be a good thing...but I have a feeling that some comment threads would begin to look like the Vegas Strip very quickly.
If you have tabbed browsing, I would suggest the following to remove groups, connections, etc. very quickly...well, quicker.
Oh wait...do you use a Mac?
If not, then hold the Ctrl key down while clicking 'delete/remove' for each group/person you want to remove. This should bring each delete page up in a separate tab. This will allow you to quickly scroll through the listing, choosing those you want. Then, visit each tab to confirm. You can also increase the number of people and groups displayed per page (see yesterday's wizard), making it even easier.
If you have any questions, just let me know!
And, as always, thanks for the GREAT tips!

Unfortunately, you cannot embed slideshows on Gather. You can create an image which links to the slideshow, but the slideshow itself will be displayed on Photobucket.
However, you can create a video slideshow or an animated GIF from your images. Is this something you may be interested in doing?
Yes:) I'd love that. It would be so much fun to create a video slideshow.
Also - I noted someone posted a photo essay which consisted of a set of several pics with comments all in one - please tell me how to do that?
Animated GIF? - I don't know if I'm ready for that - but it sounds like fun - so do tell!
...and Kev, I had no problem inserting a pic into a comment box, once I tried the HTML link from photo bucket - I had been using the IMG link and it didn't like that:)
But then I tried to drag the pic from my own computer and my (Vista OS-Windows Photo files) system wouldn't let me - it insisted on creating a separate page to open because of security settings. I tried to drag from there but that did not work either.
I'll be back as soon as I can address your questions.
What browser do you use (internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), and what video or image software do you have available to you? (Windows Movie Maker, Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc.).
