I hope when the next Gather update happens that they will change the scoring system. My idea is that in order to leave a score they have to leave a comment! No comment, then they can't leave a score. I think that's only fair.... what do you think???
Sometimes I will comment and not rate, though. Like if a photo looks cute but isn't clear. I wouldn't give it a 10, but I won't rate it so I won't wind up lowering the score or rating a pixelly picture a ten.
I always comment and rate.... However, I have been running some numbers the last few days and I find that I get about one comment and rating fore every 8 that I give.... not a very balanced comment economy.... lol
I'm with you Trudy! But if it changed, it would make gather less like the everyday world, wouldnt it? Isnt that what gather is all about.........simulating the everyday life?
i don't really let the ratings bother me. I try to do both. But if everyone gives a ten what is the point of the whole rating sytstem anyway? Do the rates you get effect the point value?
It doesn't mater to me either way. I rarely rate without a comment, but there are times I just don't know what to say because the article is so profound and leave DB10s.
I'm not sure I care that much, but I assume also this is to help stop the drive-by one debate. I have been known to rate an article a ten, and not comment though I would have to admit, especially if I've been on hours already... ;-) If there are already a hundred comments saying the same thing on a photo or something, I sometimes don't want to spend time scrolling all the way down.. I know... lazy, or fatigued at times, ha ha. Take care.
I was going to agree with you 100%. But reading John S's comment offered an opposing opinion. It is sometime difficult to find something to say when all the previous comments pretty much cover the subject. Not so much for me, because I talk too much, which is a whole other problem. But the DBO problem does drive people crazy. I has probably happened to me but I don't know for sure since I almost never check scores.

Let's see now...you want the drive-by oners to stop and leave an insulting and/or stupid comment before they shoot you with a 1 rating. Looks like a lose/lose proposition to me.
I understand your' point...but, you're only asking for salt to be rubbed in the wound. It's best to ignore them.
I only leave a few post,...but every one of my connections get a "10"........drive-by "10"'s........that is unless I have about 200 in my e-mail and don't have the time to go through all of them.
Trudy, I've been saying this since I joined Gather way back when. I've even begun not posting an option to rate on some of my more controversial articles
I can see that ratings without comments might not mean much to some people, especially if people are rating low without explaining why. As a writer I love to comment. Other people might not feel as comfortable with words and giving a rating is another option for expressing delight. That's why I'm pro choice.
As mentioned, it may help with drive-bys, but I will sometimes rate if I've nothing to add to the conversation (I only do this if I'm leaving a 10, by the way).
I am new to gather so am just learning the ropes so if anyone can explain about the points and ratings I would appreciate. I also rate when I make a comment and hope everyone will do the same if they visit my page
I think the people who leave thoughtful, longer comments should get more points than a copy and pasted "10" or "nice". That said, I really do welcome all comments, even short ones. But there is a difference in my opinion.
ratings have no value IMO,so i just say get rid of them period....comments/critiques give you specific info....
if ratings were assigned values,then most photos here would not receive,nor deserve 10's...members are not evaluating technicals,composition,nor unique perspectives...
better yet, display the rating in the comment box of the rater...or just abandon the ratings all together...because most of us just want to be polite..
