There is a friend on Gather that I'm worried about. Help!

It's hard to know how to help somebody who is despondent!

No it isn't hard to help someone who is despondent. What you do to begin with is just show alot of love and continue to reassure the person that whatever it is that is bothering them can be overcome. And just praise them for whatever it is that they're good at. Alot of positive talk always!

I think I know what your talking about. People who talk about such things typically don't do anything. I really think she is just moving.

Carol, went to read her articles. I don't think she's despondent at all. If anything she may be a little depressed but didn't see much of that either. I believe she may just have boyfriend or man troubles and doesn't feel much like talking right now. Please let me know if you find out otherwise, thanks. (I care.)

You really are a warm, caring person. After reading, I too am concerned, but other than offering an ear and encouragement, and being patient, encouraging and understanding, I don't think there is anything else you can do. You obviously have a big heart and loving arms, but you can only wrap them around someone who lets you in. Good luck, and try to keep in mind that you're doing all you can.

I agree with esther..I think she has man troubles..perhaps leaving one!

I also went to your group, and I really don't know what to think. I'm not familiar with her, so I don't know if she is always somewhat dark...or if this is something unusual.

Carol, I think she really is moving...she is one of my newer connections, so I don't know her well enough to say anything much about it. I think maybe she is having man troubles. She seems to be a 'dark' person anyway, so I don't think there's anything to worry about...I sure hope not. It's really wonderful of you to worry about someone and seek advice though! Thanks for being so caring...I think everything will be okay though!

I have stopped a couple of suicide attempts as a teacher. I had one boy who wouldn't work and was very bright. He said many profound things in class. Then one day, he told me to stop worrying about him because he wouldn't be around much longer. I called his mother and told her I was concerned. Then, he made 2 more remarks and I again called his mother. Thank God, she listened. After the third call, he tried to kill himself, but his mother was watching and she saved him. I'm a little overly cautious, but better safe than sorry. If any of you know where I can reach her, I'll make the call to help. She'll probably hate me for it and it's probably a false alarm, but . . .

It would be easier if you knew where she lived and could contact her family, or someone she knows. But I don't know how you would do that, from this site.

It's kind of a burden on a person when they know something and can't do anything to help, so I understand your feelings.

Contrary to public belief, LOTS of people who talk about doing themselves in, really do it. I've had some experience with this, and I know this is a fact.

Under present circumstances, unless you can figure out exactly where she is, the only thing left is to keep talking to her about her problem. If it's a "man" problem, my God, we've all been there. Maybe telling her a horror story of your own, how you felt and how you got over it, would help. That way, she may feel better, knowing that she's not the only one who's ever gone through this...
