We have "Taco Tuesday" every Tuesday here at home. We have been doing this for several years. It gives me a night off of having to think of something to cook and everyone loves tacos so it is a win, win situation for the whole family.
But when my husband's doctor told him he had to cut way back on sodium I knew those little pre-seasoned packets of taco seasoning were no longer going to be an option for him so I created my own taco seasoning using other spices and seasonings that were have very little or no sodium. Adding some fresh green onion to the ground beef also helps to enhance this seasoning.
Rae's Low Sodium Taco Seasoning
1 tblsp. Pararicka
1/2 tblsp. Ground Cayenne Powder
1/2 tblsp. Red pepper flakes
1/4 Ttbsp. white peppe
1 1/4 Dehydrated onion
1 tblsp. Garlic Powder
1 1/2 tblsp. cumin
2 tbls. Chili seasoning
Combine all of the ingredients in to a sandwich bag. Seal the bag and shake so the ingredients are combined. Add to 1 to 2 pounds of ground beef for tacos.
This packs a bit of a punch and is a bit on the hot side. You can experiment with the amount of pepper flakes, cayenne and white pepper and adjust that to your own tastes. But the last 4 ingredients should be kept as is.
Feel free to add any fresh or canned veggies to your meat as well to enhance the flavor. Peppers of any kind, onions, green onions, garlic, tomato paste, what ever suits your tastes but doesn't add sodium.
Tip: I make 4 times the amount of this recipe at once and keep it in an air tight container and use it every Tuesday for one month this saves me time on Tuesdays since it is already made and ready to add.
