I just finished reading Pushing Up Daisies by Jamise L. Dames. This is the first time I have read anything by this author, but I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary fiction.
It is the story of a woman named Daisy Parker. When the novel begins Daisy is thoroughly ticked off with her live in lover Jason. Once again, he has failed to come home all night and she has decided that she has had enough of his cheating. She begins tossing Jason's posssions out of the window.
After seven years of living with Jason and being a mother to his nine-year-old son, Daisy has decided that she can't take anymore. Her only worry is Jason's son Jay because she is the only mother he has ever known and she doesn't want to lose him.
It turns out that Jason wasn't out partying and cheating this time. He was murdered. At first Daisy is shocked, then she is devastated because she finds out that Jason was married and has been living a double life with her all this time. To make matters worse, she is left with no money, no job, and no home. She must find a way to take care of herself and Jay. Friends and family step in to help, but there are lots of complications and backstory. I don't want to explain too much and give away anything for those who might want to read this.
I will say that there are a lot of interconnected lives and plot twists. There are a few scenes of steamy sex, a custody battle, and some heart touching interactions between friends and family members. Overall, I think it is a great book and I will definitely read this author again. My only complaint is that sometimes the characters were a little stupid, gullible, and made illogical choices for illogical reasons. This seems to be the way of many romance novels though and the story was riveting enough that I could overlook it. If I were grading it, I would give it a B+.

For me, I wouldn't continue reading a book, though, if the characters were not believable.
