The following is from my MySpace blog (www.myspace.com/wryter01). I posted this on May 31, 2008.
About a week and a half ago, I read a post on one of my Yahoo writers groups. It was about a new book release (Orientation) from an author in the group (Rick R. Reed). I read his post and my interest piqued. I clicked on the YouTube link for the book's trailer, and I was sold! It was the first time a book trailer gave me chills. I posted a comment and mentioned that I was definitely going to buy his book, and the next day I went to the author's MySpace page and sent an email to tell him that I had ordered it. He replied back quickly and we became MySpace friends.
I ordered the book from Amazon. The book was only $15, and I had a $10 Borders gift card. Thinking it would probably be more "cost efficient" to buy another book to get the free shipping - I did just that. I knew in the back of my mind that I didn't like ordering from Amazon (unless I couldn't find something somewhere else), and now I remember why. Amazon takes forever to ship. It took seven days to be delivered, and the warehouse where it shipped from is only about two hours away. That's why I order from B&N online 95% of the time - even with their free shipping - B&N has always delivered within 3 days, regardless of what national warehouse they use. If you are going to buy my book Darkness Descending, I'd advise buying it from B&N online. Okay, that's my little rant for today. Now onto the book.
I absolutely loved Orientation by Rick R. Reed. This is an amazing love story that bordered on the supernatural. I'm usually not interested in something about reincarnation, but the way the author introduced it was magnificent, and dare I say even believable. The story begins at Christmas 1983, and ends at Christmas 2008 - one of these very joyous, the other heartbreakingly sad. Christmas serves as a minor character in the book, and all of the characters are fully developed, even the minor opportunistic drug dealer character. The dialogue is straightforward and believable. The plot, well, has a lot of twist and turns - keeping the reader turning the pages.
I could not put this book down. I loved everything about it. I usually don't give such high praise, but as one author appreciating another's truly wonderful work, I couldn't give anything less. Go ahead and order this book online. You won't be disappointed.
