Take one part Tina Turner (from the Ike and Tina days), add some Sly and the Family Stone, and stir it all up with a whole mess of raw sexuality and you get the incomparable Betty Davis. This is the woman who introduced (then-husband) Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix and was the inspiration behind Miles's Bitches Brew record. Betty Davis broke ground for countless women, both as an unabashedly sexual performer (Madonna should thank Betty every day for this!) but also as a fiercely independent business woman who would turn her back on a Motown deal if it meant she could retain control of her own material and make the records she knew she had in her.
Seattle's Light In The Attic label has done us all the favor of reissuing Betty's first two records - paragons of punk funk and an influence on a generation of performers to come. It's nearly impossible to overstate the energy and passion that infects these sides. Do yourself a favor and discover the beauty and soul that was and is Betty Davis.
