There had been few phone calls as panicked in all my life, all ten years of it, than the one I made that afternoon. My mom’s voice echoed through the receiver, and brought with it a sense of relief so palpable that it actually slowed the frantic beat of my heart. My best friend (and surrogate brother) Peter and I had been trapped, quite literally, inside our local pizzeria by a group of local kids who, though without a title, I wouldn’t hesitate to call a gang. They had harassed, chased, and generally made life hell for us for months, culminating with them waiting to pounce on us outside our favorite neighborhood hangout like lions on the hunt. One call was all that was necessary. Within moments mom appeared like the heroes in the comic books Peter and I read faithfully. With few words and no hesitation, she escorted two terrified little boys out of the corner we cowered in, and led us home, stopping first to let the gang of kids know, in no uncertain terms, that their harassment of us stopped at those doors. I’ll never forget the looks of shock on their faces as this diminutive woman stood eye to eye with them as no one probably ever had, and quietly won that battle that we alone could not. We were saved! My mom died 4 months ago. My strongest memories of her will always be as that hero, the one who would risk her very safety to bring us home safely as she did that day. In a danger filled childhood my mom’s selfless protection taught me about love what few words could, and I’ve never forgotten. For Peter and I there was, nor is, any greater hero than mom. This is only one such example.

with more clarity and "concisim" than I. A trait she continued
to practice, though not nearly long enough, in her adult writings.
I see that the unique genetic link has not been interrupted.
Well done Chris. I'm sure Mom is as pleased, perhaps a bit more.
as I am. Thanks and good luck.
From the stories your Dad once told me about your Mom's ability to be heard when they first met... I can only imagine the look on the faces of these thugs. It was an honor to know Vicki and like you have stated in your writing, I'm sure there are many more tales to tell...

I adore that picture!!! Thanks for sharing this with everyone!!!
The article was touching and well written, though I noticed a couple of grammatical errors. Good job! A 10 from me.
