Wow. This last upgrade is a killer. I have come across many sites, not just Gather, that seem to be implementing a lot of newer technology for the sake of making a fancy site ...... not necessarilly more functional, beneficial, or useful to the user. And being on dial up just increases the aggravation of having to put up with these nonsense improvements. I'm sure it affects those with high speed connections too, but to a less noticable degree.
Whatever Gather has done from this new upgrade will limit my activity here. To view a post or photo, is taking forever to open it. Waiting 2-4 minutes per item is quite ridiculous. I can't spend an hour trying to look at 15 email notifications of your new content. Then the "Join The Conversation" comment box now has that stupid little spinning wheel, indicating something is loading ...... probably that goofy HTML editor so people can add crap or glitter to a comment. Type a few words and be done with it. I gave up yesterday, having waited 22 minutes for the comment box to open. HA.
It's faster to reply to someone else's comment, but then the wrong person gets the notification. That idea should drive people nuts when reading a thread.
Quite disgusted, I deleted all my email received that maybe you had posted something new. Sorry to say that. So if you're not one of the 15 people a DAY that I can view, please don't feel that I am not TRYING to comment somehow. Be glad you can't hear my verbal outbursts because of all this mess.
Strangely enough, I am able to post photos and essays with no changes in speed. And I appreciate your viewing and comments to my content. Thank you. Even on dial up, I was pleased before with no problems viewing and commenting using my XP Home and IE 6. It was fun to plod along and brag about being one of the slowest people on Gather. So I am lost, baffled, and confused as to why the new upgrade is causing such difficulty in only one area. It cannot be the internet connection. Do I need something new that Gather needs to make it work? The ActiveX seems fine for photo loading. What about a Flash player? Which version? If so, give me a link please.
So again, excuse my limited activity here on Gather for a while. This seems more than a temporary "glitch". If Gather has become to techie for my machine, well, that's another story for another time.
Thanks for your understanding.

I did notice that it takes longer time for a comment to load, once I hit submit. It always takes time for me to get used to the changes, but so far I like what Team Gather has done.
Change is fine, usually no problem, and sometimes good. But Gather seldom makes sure things WORK before dumping them on the community. My comments loaded quick, after waiting 20 minutes to make one!
That may explain the lack of comments that I've been getting since the upgrade.
Hope you didn't mean FROM me only. :)
LOL, oh no, not just from you. I've noticed a slowdown in comments from everyone lately. It could just be because of the holiday.
It is not an upgrade, it is a nightmare.!
True. But I can sleep without Gather.
Sorry its giving you so many problems. I feel semi-lucky, and haven't run into any difficulties yet. *knock on wood*
Upgrades seem to produce a variety of problems, for different people, at different times. Can you share that lucky piece of wood?
Wow, I will have to see if this is a problem on on my dial up desktop. Thanks for posting, I'll check it out. Ugh.
Dial up used to be fine. I think Gather is the problem.
I'm sorry you are having such a problem with Gather on dial up. I have a feeling it is only going to get worse and not just with Gather. Eventually dial up just won't be able to keep up.
It has been fine, so far. I don't believe its the connection, its how Gather wants stuff to appear. Mostly for the advertisers benefit. Even the high speed "point braggers" here are only making 15 ¢ hr!
I haven't had that problem, but I have had others. It took me 4 times to get a post to go through yesterday. I have also had a problem with some group notifications in my email. When I click the link sent to me it opens up the message page but won't let me comment on it. That is weird cause I can see others comments but their is no conversation place on mine. Also it won't even let me comment to others, if I click that it just jumps on the screen and nothing else happens. I am waiting a few days before I report it to see if they fix it. Good luck with your problem.
Thanks for sharing a different kind of problem.
Sorry this update makes things so slow for you!
Thanks. Wish I could pinpoint what they have changed.
R B ,Sorry about your problems , I haven't experienced any yet.
Thanks Phil. Wish I understood why its a viewing problem only. I just left one after waiting 5 minutes for the comment box to open. That STUPID editor has to load with every picture you open. And nobody uses it, except to post an idiotic group graphic.
Mine is slowing down, too, I am using my daughter's computer this afternoon, it works better.
Gather is the slowest, most ponderous, most aggrevating site I belong to! I have a fast computer and high speed internet connection all of which work great on other sites. I only stay here at Gather because of the people in Home Comfort group---people like you, RB---who contribute wonderfully rich content and are always responsive to the contributions of others. I am disappointed we don't have the top 100 articles to view anymore. Only 20 of what Gather deems "most popular", none of which I've found interesting, informative or relevant since the latest "upgrade". But Gather doesn't listen to its users. Never has. Probably never will. The "powers-that-be" just keep "upgrading" and making the site less and less user friendly. It certainly isn't fun like it used to be!
Thank you Natalie. I don't mind change.....but please make sure it works. I'm sure if a retailer changed their site and customers had to wait 20 minutes to place an order, they would be shopping elsewhere, quick. And those who designed it would be on the street, quicker yet.
You're right, top articles and photos are now a JOKE. I'm still hanging in there with hopes, but the rope is starting to unravel.
Sometimes new and improved is just different. I have a dial up connection, too, so I have some difficulties. Lately videos have gone from slowing me down to sometimes freezing me out.
It's taking things a while to load for me to...maybe gather will fix it.
Even with DSL I have to sometimes wait for the comment box to appear. Hopefully this these issues will be given a priority and quickly addressed by Gather.
not all of the issue you are having are affecting dial-up users. I'm on DSL and the darn comment box not opening is a big issue. But, if it doesn't open right away, instead of waiting, I refresh the page and then it usually pops up right away. But, definitely slower to load pages overall
Oh, now I see the HTML to add the crazy glittery stuff. Just downloaded that toolbar, I sure hope it don't slow my computer down. Actually, it sounds like the problem is more on your end. You might have a virus or something on your end slowing you down. Have you downloaded anything new lately? Once I had an article directory system that was fine for months and months, then suddenly it started slowing down my computer. I always call my virus protection people and let them take a look at the computer. I got Norton's and they are able to connect to my computer and find the problem.
Might try a crazy glitter here:
Get the hottest myspace comments without ever leaving myspace!
Hey...it works.
Oh no, the first graphic arrives.
Sometimes it's nice to be able to play. I don't do Pings either.
If it's a loading/memory/speed thing on my end, wish I could identify how to improve it. All was fine prior to the upgrade, and problems immediately after. This was the first item viewed today, and strangely it loaded very well? So now it's off to see how things are working when trying to view photos and other content.
It's not just you, there seems to be some of us who have the same problem. I have high speed internet and I have to refresh the page three or more times to make a comment. You may want to try that the next time you see that wheel thingy spinning around where the comment box should be.
Thanks. I tried that too. It just takes longer for the whole reload process to start over again. If it doesn't open within a LONG 30 seconds, sorry, no comment from me. I even got the new flash, yet it still pops up a note saying I new new flash. Ugh and dumb.
Thanks all for your hopes, dreams and suggestions. Things are still not what they used to be, and not just for dial up either. I'm plodding along like a turtle with no legs, a bird with no wings, and a car with no gas. Mumbling, not singing, the tune of a Gather with no brains.
I don't have the little HTML editor on my comment box. Am I missing something?
I have been having trouble posting certain times of the day. The last chat was a nightmare.
