Forever New
My friend packed her just-used wedding dress, a beautiful thing, saying to me, "I'm saving this for the daughter that I will have; she can wear it and pass it on. It will be forever new."
Thinking to myself, keep your mouth shut; as usual I didn't listen and told her that nothing, absolutely nothing, was forever new. Did she take offense? Of course she did!
That seemed to end our friendship, as I won't go into the hurtful-words that followed. A few years went by and I got one of those phone calls in the middle of the night. It was my friend, crying her eyes out.
"What's wrong? How can I help?", I asked.
"Please come over. Please. My marriage is finished; you were right, I have no daughter and my husband or soon to be ex, has found a younger model to trade me in for. Nothing is forever new. Are you up for a wedding dress burning?"
"Be right there."
