Awakened-a poem by Miri after hearing Barack Obama

This is a poem written by my Granddaughter Miri after we went to see Barack Obama speak in Green Bay.  She is 11 years old.



Awakened

          I rarely applaud the subtleness of the world
             but today I clapped until my arms hurt.
I looked around and saw all these people of all different colors
          they all looked at this man with hope in their eyes
                           such trust they had for him.
                                             Hope
                                 Hope for their lives.
                   I had always thought of him as a picture.
                          Someone who was in the news
                     A politician that made many promises
        But while I was listening I couldn't believe I was there.
                          He never seemed real to me.
               Always a figment of the media's imagination,
                                    always a picture.
                                          Hope.
                              Hope for change he said.
                            He never seemed real to me.
                                           Until now.

Miri, I love your name. This is a wonderful poem, hard to believe that it was written by an 11 year old. Miri, keep up your writing and have grandma post them here for us all to read, this was great.

This is fantastic verse. It's amazing such a young child can keep her theme throughout the poem and explain both scenery and personal feelings. I would suggest she send a copy of this poem to Senator Obama.

That is awesome Lyn and she is a very talented and insightful 11 year old. He does inspire hope in most people when they look at him. Others don't seem to "get it" and that is their prerogative. Maybe they will change their tune when he wins and hopefully starts to do some fantastic things to get this country back on our feet and standing tall!
Your Grand daughter is not alone...there are millions of people who are behind Obama after they take the time to listen to him. Barack Obama is a force for the people of this country, he's intelligent, self assured and shines with confidence in his beliefs. No body should be afraid of this great man, he's just what we need at this time in our history.

Well, Miri was impressed with the actuality of the political process and the energy of the people in the auditorium. I would have liked to take her to see McCain too when he was in Green Bay. I think it is important that children are instilled with the unbelievable privilege it is to have the right to vote. Also, that opinions may differ, but that we are all Americans and have the Right to stand up and speak our minds. Then choose.
