She awoke abruptly from the dream, the images vivid in her minds eye.
Marcie felt fright in her heart, it was pounding in her chest. She threw
back the covers, and without even sticking her feet into her slippers, went
quickly to to her son Charlie's room. She opened the door softly, and
went to his crib and he was sleeping on his back breathing softly, and
evenly as only a baby can. Relief swept over her, and leaving the door
ajar, went into the kitchen for a drink of water. Her head still light
from jumping out of bed so quickly, she recalled what had led up the
the terrible scene she had seen in her dream.
Marcie was a single mother still in her early twenties. Charlie had been
conceived during a romantic fling on a Holiday, a little more than a year
ago, and she had called Chris, after returning home and finding
out she was pregnant, because she thought he had the right to know.
Chris was a handsome young man she had met on the cruise ship
that was taking her to the Bahamas for a two week stay. They had
struck up a friendship at the captains table for dinner the second night
out at sea. They had been seated next to each other, and while
he was very nice, Marcie was quite shy, and didn't think he had
an interest in her, but the next day, she was on deck sitting in a
lounge chair, reading, and Chris came along and took the chair next
to her, and asked if she would mind him sitting there, she smiled at
him, and nodded no, not really wanting to start up a conversation
as she had just came out of a bad marriage, and this trip was to help
her forget the way she felt when she was suddenly left alone, young, and
naive in her own way. She kept her eyes on her book, and then Chris
spoke to her again, saying I would like to get to know you better. Are
you alone on this cruise? Marcie, looked at him, and said to herself,
this is a worn out line, smiled and answered , yes I am alone, but I am
not interested in any kind of relationship. Chris smiled at her with a look
in his eyes that could have melted a steel wall, and said, I just thought
we might have dinner together again tonight, you know, alone,
not with all the others at the captains table, it is not great eating by
yourself. Marcie, hesitantly , said okay,I guess that would be all right,
so they made plans for dinner. She dressed carefully looking beautiful
in her sleek pale green silk dress, and shoes to match, bought for this
cruise, just in case she had an occasion to wear it. This might be the
only chance she had, she thought as she pulled it on over her head,
and smoothed the silky material over her well formed body, she gazed
at herself in the mirror, and then the knock sounded at the door.
Chis stood there when she opened the door, more handsome than she
had remembered from this afternoon, his tux fit him well and he had a
white rose in his hand, and gave it to her. She took it as they closed
the door and walked to the restaurant he had selected on the ship.
He had reservations for a corner table by the windows, they
had a beautiful view of the ocean, the moon shining on it, and stars
twinkling. Nothing could have been added to make a more romantic
atmosphere. They began with just small talk, nothing much about their
past, and nothing at all about a future, which suited Marcie just fine. The night
flew by, and a date was made to meet again on the deck the next day. This
friendly meeting kept up during the cruise and even when they landed for the
few days in the Bahamas, and during the course of one of the little romantic
interludes, things suddenly became quite amorous, and Marcie found herself
falling for Chris, head over heels although her mind was saying no, don't do it,
her heart was opening to him, and he was so wonderful to her, it all seemed
so right, so they spent the night together in his cabin on the way home on
the cruise. The lovemaking was wonderful and satisfying to them both, and
Marcie felt like she had landed on a cloud in heaven. But the days flew quickly
by and soon it was time to separate and each go home. Nothing was ever
said about a continuing relationship, but they exchanged phone numbers
and he never called her.
She found out she was pregnant, and she was afraid, and bewildered.
Marcie thought Chris had the right to know so she dialed his number,
and a little child answered the phone, Marcie asked if Chris was there,
and the child called, Mommy, where's Daddy, someone is on the phone
for him.. Marcie quickly hung up the phone, stunned, he had a child,
and he was married. He would never know of her plight, she vowed she
would keep this child now nestled under her heart, and bring the baby
up by herself. She felt betrayed, and foolish, she had broken her own rules.
Vividly recalling the dream, Chris taking the baby from his
crib, and shoving her out of the way, shouting I always wanted a son,
you should have told me me, I am taking my son, he is mine.
Sipping her water, the scene in her mind played over and over, fear
overwhelmed her.. She knew she would never call Chris again.
She crept back into her bed, Charlie was her life, she loved him,
she might be wrong, but she never wanted to be alone again.
She drifted off to sleep, hoping she would not dream.

From me: Powerful as always, Elsie. A look at the tough decision resulting from a momentary lapse.
Bravo! Elsie Duggan you are fantastic! I loved this
story and the romance that ended up not being
there at the end of the cruise. And her dream! Oh
my goodness! But the little girl brought her back to
her senses and she knew then how it must be.
This was simply mahvelous!
