I was eleven in 61. We lived in alberta ,Virginia. In a one story house. We had a very long
driveway. It was all down hill too. My older brother Jim helped us . Us being my twin brother
Steve and My younger brother Larry Build these carts out of scrap lumber. My name is tom.
These carts had rubber tires and you could steer them with your feet and a rope.
We loved racing down the driveway .It went straight into route 1 . There was barbed
wire on both sides. I don't ever remember any of us getting hurt. In the woods nex't to
the house there was a 12 foot high bank. We had trails made throught the pine trees.
We were always dragging in red clay into the house on our shoes. Whe we wore shoes.
We would start at the top of the bank on tricycles. Me and steve , Or jim and larry.
Down that steep hill we would go .dodging the trees. What fun we had. One day we decided
to make a fort out of berlap sacks. It took us all day to do it too. We just nailed them
to some pine trees. Put dried pine neeldes on the floor . We bugged our parents till
they said we could spend the night . we were all excited. But it turned out we spent
the night at home. All the night time noises scared us real bad. My mom and dad always
had friends over each weekend. They would play country music. My mom was self taught
on the guitar.and banjo. anything with strings. When she was about nineteen she had
two chances to be on the grand ole opry. The first time she got stage fright and wouldn't
go on . they gave her a second chance. That time it was pouring down rain. Her costume
was soaked. and they would'nt let her go on. After that she just gave up. She is 77 and
still plays music.I know this bothered her for several years. she was so talented.
still is. Well thats about it for a while. Just short stories about when i was a kid.
