While an orange, or orange juice, and a daily multivitamin is a quick and easy way to get a dose of Vitamin C, there are a number of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain it such as broccoli, green peppers, tomatoes, and sweet and white potatoes. According to Medicine Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, Vitamin C is a "water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for growth and development". The Medicine Plus website explains that because it is water-soluble, Vitamin C can't be stored in the body, leftover amounts leave through urine, which means "you need a continuous supply of such vitamins in your diet".
Building salads that include a variety of fruits and vegetables is a simple, easy, fun way that I get my Vitamin C. Oranges are not usually my first choice of Vitamin C-bearing fruits, but I am working to diversify my fruit and vegetable choices. I am going to be more "open-minded" about my citrus fruit options. Learning new things is one of my daily resolutions, so I did some research and discovered a wealth of information about sources of Vitamin C and why it is so important. Here are some of the websites that I found to be interesting and informative:
- Wikipedia.Org -Vitamin C
- Sunkist.Com - Healthy Citrus Recipes
- HowStuffWorks.Com - How Vitamin C Works
- EatWell.Gov.Uk - Food Standards Agency: Vitamin C
