A new docudrama is looking for a family that struggles with obesity day in and out. Not every family member has to be obese—but diet/weight/health issues present ongoing challenges and conflict day in and out for the family as a whole. If there are friends, neighbors and extended family nearby who are also dealing with obesity, so much the better. We are looking for a family that is not afraid to show the dark side of being overweight, and is ready to take on the weight battle together. There must be a mom in the family. Please send the following information to mb2casting@yahoo.com
1. Name, age, location
2. Contact information: phone number and email address
3. Please write a brief description about your family and how obesity has affected it
4. Email a recent family photo

Hello :o),

I just wanted to stop by since I am finally going through what is now listed as under 4,400 pieces of gather new mail that is sitting in my inbox on here.

With that mentioned I just came across either a mailing from you yourself, or someone else brought this piece to my attention. You or they felt that your creation should be shared with the gather community, which I am very glad that it was passed on to me to view. So I wanted to say Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to publish it here on gather for us to all view. :o)

As well before I leave you I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year... in 2009 :o)

Hi Stephen, I'm wondering what is the best way to combat belly fat that tends to creep up on older women. Are there any exercises you recommend? Does eating a late dinner and going to bed soon after contribute to it? Sigh.

Hi Liz,

Good question. First, you need to find out what type of energy it is... if it's nervous energy you should focus on deep breathing from the belly to relax.

If it's true energy you can do some seated and standing stretches to release tension and move blood through your body.

what is the truth about green tea helping you lose weight? I switched from coffee to black tea because of headaches and stomache aches last year. Now I am switching from black tea to green tea because the symptoms were starting again with headaches and stomach problems. Does it really help you lose weight too?

Lately, I've also heard a lot about acai berry. Does this work, Stephen? There are so many diets out there that I'm overwhelmed. And some are too expensive for someone just out of school.

Hi Linda,

Eating close to bed is pretty much a myth since your body is still active at when you're sleeping and you're only going to store EXCESS calories which accumulate over the course of the day.

Dinner should focus on less starchy carbs though and be centered around a lean protein and fresh vegetables.

Plus, you don't want to stop eating at 6pm and then go until 8 or 9 am the next morning... that's 14 hours without food!

I think that's the point that a lot of diet advice people forget about... it's actually not healthy to only eat over the course of 10 hours everyday. You're more likely to store fat with larger meals all packed together at lunch and dinner.

Black tea has a lot more caffeine than green tea. Good call on making the switch - it's healthier and you should have less headaches.

Green tea has been shown to help people burn additional calories, but the effect is not anything too outstanding.

I would drink it though for it's healthy antioxidant benefits

Is it better to eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than 3? And how important is breakfast in helping your body balance the incoming calories throughout the day? I drink a large iced coffee when I get into the office at 9. I'm not hungry at all and don't tend to eat anything until 11ish.

In my experience 6 meals is the upper limit to how many meals you should have per day... the reason is that after 6 many people whould have to start eating less than 200 calories per meal... that's like 6 mouthfuls...

You absolutely must start your day with a small meal. It's literally breaking the fast from when you last finished dinner...

Check out the comment above where I explained that if you wait until 11 the next day you've basically gone 16 hours without eating (if you stop eating at 7pm)...

It also means that you're consuming all your calories for the day between an 8 hour span -think about the effect that has on your metabolism...

The fastest and easiest way to lose belly fat is by eliminating sugar in all forms... I have a free 5 part eCourse on it right on my website. It's completely free and I wrote it because it was the #1 question I kept getting from all my online clients.

It's also the only one true place you can spot reduce body fat (the reason has to do with insulin sensitivity and cortisol).

Many of my online clients work out right at home which for them makes for fast and efficient workouts.

All you truly need is a pair of adjustable dumbbells... even if you got a mat, stability ball, and band you would still be under a $100 investment.

I'll post a video soon on exactly what I use

Snow Angel, motivation is a constant cycle of putting one foot in front of the other. It's about just moving forward even on the days where you'd rather just sit on your coach and rest.

Write down at least 5 reasons why you MUST stick with your program and keep them in front of you everyday...

Maybe you're getting ready for a big event, or maybe vacation on the beach, or maybe it's so that you're healthy 40 years from now so that you can enjoying seeing your children's children grow up...

Motivation comes in many forms and is different for everyone-

Great questions!

Ellipticals are great, but they are exclusively for calorie burning and improving your heart and lungs... don't think of them as a way to tone your body just because they have handles to hold on to.

In terms of exercise selection, interval training is by far the best tool you can use to lose weight and tone your body! Unless you have 90 minutes to kill (and I don't know who does...) I highly recommend short, intense workouts.

In 2007, I managed to lose 30 pounds. I went from a size 18 to a size 12!

In 2008, I managed to maintain my weight.

For 2009, my goal is to lose atleast 25 pounds. If I lose 25 pounds, that will put me at my "GOAL" weight! If I can lose a little more than that, I wouldn't complain! LOL!

I chose my goal weight because when I reach that, i will weigh 1 pound LESS than my wonderful hubby! :)

I've read that you should exercise in the morning for maximum benefits. I've also read the same things about exercising in the evening. Then again, I've read that the time of day doesn't matter. I honestly didn't really think the time made a difference, but I could be wrong.

Should I exercise in the morning or the evening? Or does it really matter?

Great job Bridget!

If you exercise first thing in the morning before eating you will burn more body fat, but that doesn't mean you can't get equally as good of results when you workout later in the day.

As much as i hate mornings, I'm thinking of doing my workouts between 6:15am and 7:00 am!

I get up and make my hubby lunch before he leaves for work at 6:00. He leaves at 6:15 and I don't have to get the kids up to get ready for school until 7:00.

I usually go back to bed for that time but am thinking that this change might be just the ticket that I need!

I actually trained a client of my until the day she gave birth ; ) Of course we changed her workouts with each month, and sometimes even workout to workout depending on how she was feeling, but she said it kept her feeling less stressed about her body and her upcoming big-day...

I really wish there was something out there to help us poor ladies reduce cellulite. I've had the stuff since 7th grade. Any tips?

Thanks, Stephen, for talking about commitment. I think that many of us make a huge commitment to certain goals like careers and we figure the rest will take care of itself.

Good call Bridget, and that's pretty nice that your husband gets his lunch made for him... he's a lucky guy. Hopefully, you're putting in healthy foods for him ; )

Thanks...I guess I should start with popping in my pregnancy exercise video's. I just don't always feel like following them.

Excellent point Jennifer and truthfully most people don't think about their health until it's too late...

I tell him he's lucky all the time! LOL! He's a BIG boy and should be making his own lunches! :)

As a mom, I ALWAYS pack healthy choices because I want my kids to learn to eat healthy!

Michelle, Ugh. Cellulite. What's a girl to do? I've heard that it's hereditary. I don't know what to do about it.

I saw a question about best type of carbs somewhere... hands down, dark green veggies.

I know you probably don't like them, but there is simply nothing better you can put in your body. Try to include them at 3 meals during the day. The fiber and nutrients alone will help you lose weight and feel less hungry.

I have a really big square looking behind...what is the best exercise to round it out? After this baby, I really like to get it into shape. I'd settle for a Kim Kardashian (sp) or J-Lo behind...big is fine with me as long as it's shaped!

I am on a medication that is making me retain fluid. It seems to be really adding up on my stomach. My hourglass shape has changed to a pear shape. Is there an exercise that I can do to help get my shape back?

Cellulite is genetic, BUT it only is visible with excess body fat gain and toxins being built up in your body... you CAN eliminate it

My problems seem to lie in my stomach! I've had 2 children by c-section and it's been SO hard to get my stomach firmed back up! UGH!

That being said, I wouldn't trade my children for a firm flat stomach! :)

There are only 15 minutes left of the chat, and I know Stephen is doing his best to answer as many questions that he can in the time we have left together.

Stephen,
I have had and continue to have lots of pain medications given via IM so my hips are filled with lumps. Is there anything that I can do to get my hip muscle back into shape and make the knots go away?

Even when I ate well and was at my smallest in high school I had the stupid stuff. Grrr....but that is where I store my fat. I guess my best bet is to just try and reduce it.

I saw one about my background... I've been working with clients for over 12 years and I've now completed over 12,000 private sessions. I wouldn't do anything else...

It's always best to consult your physician when it comes to the medications they are giving you and their contraindications. If you get an "all clear to exercise" though you can start woring right into body weight exercise to build back up your glute and hamstring muscles.

I also highly recommend foam rolling for working out tight muscles and "knots."

It's about $20 for the foam roller and you can really get into a lot of deep tissue work - it's especially great for tight hips
