I began my adventure with "The Devil Wears Prada" ready for an hour or so of nonstop laughs, between the trailers and the cast lineup one could expect no less. I was amazed to find that this movie offered so much more, it seemed packed with a little bit of everything. What I experienced was a wonderfully orchestrated mix of humor, ethics, life choices and a glimpse into the human psyche. It is a rare pearl indeed when you sit back at the end, as the credits roll, and feel a sense of empathy mixed with joy for both the villain and the heroine.
Meryl Streep gave a remarkable performance as Miranda Priestly the chief editor of Runway Magazine, famous for its influence on fashion. A true terror in heels she inspires fear and dread in everyone who happens into her path. Miranda's profound ability to intimidate is cleverly emphasized by the soft spoken way in which she wields her power. Artfully building up to her first appearance on the scene one finds themselves experiencing the speechless fear of the fatal moment of encounter with staff and the new assistant waiting for an interview. Streep skillfully brings life to this character taking you through a variety of feelings from hate to sympathy. This soft spoken vision of cold and calculating calmness can strike quickly and quietly with the deadly skill of a Scorpion, Yet, in a moment of unexpected exchange gives you a moments glimpse of the soul you know must be in there somewhere.
Anne Hathaway gives a powerhouse performance as Andy (Andrea) Sachs a naive young fledgling eager to soar in the Big Apple with dreams of establishing herself in the world of journalism. In desperate need of employment to make ends meet she signs up with a placement agency who sends her on an interview at Runway Magazine. This simple down home girl finds herself thrown into the exotic world fashion were being cold and cruel is chic and camaraderie is a foreign concept. We watch the slow progression of Andy's journey on a road of personal growth and learning as her virtue is compromised as she makes hard choices in life, As time goes on she is given a glimpse of realization of what humanity is capable of, and what she herself is capable of when one jumps into a fallacy of "forced choices" with both feet.
The supporting actors deserve recognition as they depict characters that keep the plot fluent. Emily Blunt plays Emily a self serving individual and an already refined assistant of Miranda. Stanly Tucci plays Nigel the long standing and loyal to the end art director of Runway. Both portray the yin and yang of personalities caught up in the world of snobs and fashion. Their characters make this world of fast moving changes and tensions come alive to those of us who have never experienced the influence and impact that fashion has even on the average Target and Walmart buyer.
Adrian Grienier as Nate, Andy Sachs live-in boyfriend is a poster child for patience and forgiveness. Simon Baker as Christian Thompson, a well established writer and resident man on the prowl, gives his own special flavor to the plot. Tracie Thoms as Lily and Rich Sommer as Doug add comedy and flair as close friends of Nate and Andy. Individually each adds their own spice to the story line. These characters keep the theme and perspectives of the tale alive as each delivers a needed dimension to fill out this amazingly depicted tale.
In my opinion this is a must see film for anyone who feels the need to have their faith in the human race renewed. I would rate it high in originality of concept as well as it's mastery to take the viewer by surprise. One of the better productions of the year it definitely gets an A in my book.

The title means nothing to me, but to read your description I can see this is a study in people and their interactions -- it sound far more interesting now. I may just check it out, and if I do, I'll let you know!
It shows your ability to write a very involving review of the movie. This is a movie I would have never looked twice at, based on the title.
You offer just enough information to make me interested in actually viewing the movie! I think you should be getting paid for this!
It really was a great movie hope you can find the time to see it.
Eric
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I enjoyed the writing of the review as much as I did the movie. As for the rest, well I just hope they judge on content rather then the amount of comments! I have been gone a while though so it is to be expected.
David
It's nice to see you here. I'm so glad you enjoyed the way the review was presented. It is nice to be back on a somewhat regular basis, but I do miss a day or so still. Thank you so much for your support and your opinion of my writing they are appreciated.
Just a real big thank you to all of you for checking in and commenting on it. This really meant a lot to me. *smile*
It is very good to see you back and I hope to see more articles from you!
Unfortunately I have no interest in this kind of movie or Meryl Streep. I have never liked her.
AND hope YOU are taking it easy and not overdoing yourself!!
Great bit'o'work Amber!
what an excellent review!! it makes me want to see the movie - previously, i'd had zero interest. ;)
Thanks for your comment, it is funny how Streep just has a habit of turning some off. Not sure exactly what it is about here but I know many who have the same reaction to her. Perhaps she has just played too many villains **smile**
Peter
I am glad you enjoyed it, it is my first attempt at such a thing.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I do tend toward more descriptive writing, have not decided yet if that is a good thing or bad thing. However, I will keep your ideas in mind should I try for another one. As for the why, I did think I captured that in the last paragraph, but perhaps it was not written clear enough.
Audrey
Thanks for the thumbs up.
It is good to be back, I've missed reading as much as writing and hope to keep building energy to do a lot more of both!
Thank you for your comment, as I said I tend toward more descriptive writing. There are some who do not like that style though and I respect MS's opinion and the ability to share it honestly. I am glad you liked the style of the review and apprecieate your support of it.
Mike
Your way too funny. I really did not see this one as a "chick" movie -- now "Must Love Dogs" there is a great chick movie! Tell them its my fault and hope you enjoy it!
Shannon
Ah another Streep hater? LOL. Thanks for your comments and rating though, I appreciate your taking time to read this.
Point well taken on the director and screen writing aspects, will keep these in mind for sure. As for the plot, I myself have always hated reading a review that tells me the plot of the story. I want something to look forward to and if the story is neatly laid out, why bother watching it. Perhaps I'm wrong on this one but it has always been the way I felt so I tried to give enough to draw one in but not enough to give it all away.
Thanks for taking the time to stop and sharing your insight with me!
Guy
** trembling a bit in my shoes ** Well I liked it! LOL. I look forward to knowing how you felt about the movie really. If you think I over sold it by all means I would expect you to confront me on it! Thanks for the comments and support!
Julian
Thank you for your comments. I think sometimes you "guys" might be missing some good movies when you rank them as female oriented. There are many out there that by all means are for us sentimental love story types, I know my Scott is not fond of those. Then again if there is not a war plot, guns or action he is pretty much done in the first 5 minutes -- LOL. I hope you enjoy the movie, and as always my prayers are with Lynn. Thanks for stopping in and giving me your support.
Thanks for taking time to read this and giving me your opinion of it. If you do see the movie, I hope you like it. Let me know!
Paul
For me the movie really was much more than just a comedy or a "slapped together feature", Hope you get as much as I did from it.
Jay
Thanks for time and your opinion. Will do on the get well part. Believe me after that adventure my family will not allow me to over due it! *smile*
I'm off to get some rest in and will do my best to return later to read up on the work I have missed, ( still not sure what I miss more the reading or the writing ) and check back here.
I do appreciate everyone's help and support on this. Your all great!!
Glad you didn't leave, and I hope you're feeling better soon.
Dawne
First of all, don't ever hesitate or feel guilty to ask me to read one of your articles. I'd be happy to anytime.
The review is excellent as is the movie, she is one my more favorite actresses and an incredibly talented woman...I agree with your opinion 100%....Meryl definitely deserves the Oscar nomination....Great job....Great review...."10"....Welcome back, hope everything is going better in your life...
Most of my work is just a document of others a collection and a celebration of sorts.
This is how I am eminently qualified to act as a host to my party and wish everyone attending a happy Unbrithday and best regards.
Enjoy your time.

This is a movie that caused laughter all the way through. I am not a big fan of Meryl Streep, but she did an excellent job in her role. VERY BELIEVABLE. In fact, I hope she gets an Oscar for her performance. (I cannot imagine how she kept from laughing in some of her scenes.)
I don't usually like to re-watch movies I have seen but am seriously considering purchasing this CD. I think it has enough "under" plots that it is worth seeing several times.
I like the review of this movie . I did not see it, but by reading the names of the actors and the review, I agree it is worth seeing it. I have to ask my daughter who knows more about the new movies , if we have it in Greece ; if not it will surely come.
Get well fast and thank you so much for this beautiful review!
love and light
I cannot tell you how good it is to be back, thank you for your well wishes. I agree it is probably the parts she plays that makes her so easily rejected. However to me this is a sign of real talent. If you can play your part(s) so well that it carries over into the life of the viewer, they you play a convincing role.
Bongo
I guess we each glean something different from movies we watch. What one sees as a work of art, others see as a enormous failure. That is the beauty and wonder of human nature. Though your opinion of the movie is less then what I took out of it, I am glad it delivered what you were looking for. I do agree however with you that Simon Baker who played Christian, the writer and fling, was a far cry from attractive. Must have been his fame and money, of course that could have been one of the underlying points.
Bill P.
Not cliché at all, it is an honest opinion of your take on the movie. I respect that view as not everyone will walk away from this, or other movies, with the same view I do. Viewing it from a woman's point of view the only part of Grieniers character that was hard to swallow was his patience. I found it surprising and refreshing.
Thanks for stopping by I appreciate your support. In light of the many men who have threatened evil upon me should it turn out to be a chick flick in their eyes ( LOL ) I think it a wise choice to wait for it to hit TV.
Steve
LOL ... ah yet another who will probably never read another review by me should this end up being an hour of boredom to him!! I hope I will not need to find a large rock to hide under! I really did like the movie and I hope I don't send you into hours of torture. I would really like to know what you honestly think after watching it though. Now I am curious.
Dawne
Glad you liked the review and hope you enjoy the movie as much as I did. I'm way to stubborn to leave this place, and there is too much good writing to be found if one takes the time to look for it.
Hope to be back more and more as time goes by. I wore myself out yesterday and ended up sleeping right through the night. Amazing how the body reacts when your working towards healing.
I really did think it was good, however as you can read above others did find it cheesy. I did not expect what I got from the movie so this alone intrigued me. If you do watch it I hope you find as much in it as I did.
K.D.
Thanks for the welcome back and the thumbs up, even if it is only two. I am glad you liked the presentation. I know I still have a lot to learn, but perhaps it was not half bad for a first attempt. Thanks for stopping and supporting me.
I did my best to present what I walked away with from this movie and what it made me feel as I watched it. I still feel it is worth the renting and would take time to watch it again. Thanks for stopping and giving me your opinion.
Faith
I don't know what your movie viewing tastes are but I do hope you find it to be worth your time. Would love to know what your think after you watch. With so many different outlooks on this movie my curiosity is really high now.
Todd
Todd as always your way too good to me. Thanks for taking time to stop and read this. It is great to hear that someone else found this movie more then it was presented as. I too was astounded with Steep's performance, I actually felt the apprehension, fear, and hate she inspired in those who came in contact with her. I was more amazed at her ability to make me sympathize and actually respect her in the end. To me this was an amazing tribute to her abilities as an actress.
Thanks for stopping in and sharing your ideas. I agree that each of us here who write can find a celebration of our efforts in every thing we publish. I know I find joy in reading the many here who have stopped to comment. Each has their own style and flair that makes their writing unique to those of us who get to read and experience it.
Spartan
Thanks for taking time for me and for the kind comments!
Esaiah
Many thanks for stopping and your comment, hope your enjoy it.
Leah
Not to worry it is already moved from theaters to DVD so half the cost for just as much fun.
Not a problem, as I have said often here everyone is different and enjoys different story lines. I have always loved Streep and Tucci, but I must admit is was Hathaway that broke the bank for me and drew me to the movie. The combination was too much to turn away from.
Firoze
Thanks so much for taking the time to stop and leave your thoughts.. I really cannot thank those who did enough as this was an important piece to me.
I must admit that someone pointed out to me one spelling error that was a whopper! I have edited the review to correct it as I am anal retentive about those things.
I too agree that giving away the whole plot seems to take the joy out of watching the movie, now there are two of us who feel that way *smile*. I think we often forget that people associate things in a general view so to speak. If the movie was below standards to some one then those who enjoyed it must have been mistaken. This is not something I would take personally as it is just human nature to associate the two together without seeing they are two separate subjects. Thanks for the defense on my behalf though it was so kind of you to do so.
Nice to hear you had fun with this movie too. Thank you so much for adding your opinion.
June
I am with you, I will probably by the DVD for our collection, if for no other reason then Streep's performance. It is nice to here that someone else did catch the many undertones to the movie, as no one who has seen it made reference to them yet. I was beginning to think I might have read to much into it. I thought the these were masterfully worked into the plot and story line and moved with the flow of the movie without bogging it down.
Had a bad few days here after my last visit, but these are to be expected from time to time. I am doing so much better then before and I am overly eager to write again. Thanks for the concern and it is nice to know I was missed.
Marinela
There are indeed many things which can hamper our ability to be on gather. I am indeed looking forward to being at my best again, till then I will do what I can and write when I can. I am thankful that I can look forward to seeing a full recovery as there are so many who must fight daily just to make it through the day. It puts into perspective the fact that I have much to be thankful for.
Thank you for your kind comments on the review and I hope that when it reaches you in Greece ( a place I one day hope to be able to visit ) that you and your daughter will enjoy it as much as I did.
Bright blessings to you and yours.
Again there is little I can say to thank all those who came to my aid in this, I feel beyond blessed to have so many who are willing to be there when I need them. Thanks to all!
So good to see you back and please take care of you!
This is an excellent review and though I don't usually watch movies and never go to the movies, your review has me very interested - great writing, and a ten!
Get some rest and come back!!!!
Hugs,
Marilyn :)
Thanks for taking time to read and comment. I did enjoy trying my hand at this and now I'm glad I did. I will take care and look forward to coming back full force. I have so many ideas now to write about.
Richard
I edited this review about six times before I felt it was ready, and even then had my doubts. I am beginning to think I hit the goal I was reaching for. I appreciate your reading and letting me know what you thought
Do I need to say more?
By the way please teach me how to create a link in your article
keep smiling
You did exceptionally well- I'd dare say better than I did on mine and I have a terribly one-sided view on my own work [LOL]!
Very well done, my Dear!
You've got a couple of techical glitches though. Soft spoken is in there twice, and a small punctuation error. (But dang what a well written review!) Two thumbs up, Lady!
