I recently ran a contest for the most enticing opening to a query letter. I had some really good entries. Thanks to everyone who entered. I chose Kelly M. as the winner. Her opening line was clever and would pique an editor's interest before the obilgatory "I'm a writer," or "I'd like to write about..." information. I found it to be creative and conversational, much the same way one would pitch an oral query.
Congratulations, Kelly M. Please contact me with your mailing info. I'll be sending you a signed copy of "Freelancing Later in Life."
Here's Kelly's winning entry:
"American moms are getting…well…desperate. A flip through the TV guide and shows like Nanny 911 and Supernanny which feature parents with out of control kids will give you the impression that moms and dads today are becoming increasingly overwhelmed with the task of keeping their children under control.
So how do you know whether your own disciplinary style is in need of a makeover?"

And speaking of contests, I'm shamelessly asking for readers for my entry in one here on Gather. It's called The Big BM. Please read it before passing (no pun intended!) judgement.
