First of all, I'm sorry but my white ancestors were never slave owners. Then again they were not in the United States during the civil war or before, most of them immigrated in the 20th century. I'm not personally responsible for slavery, nor were my ancestors. Thomas Jefferson, a white slave owner who couldn't help but constantly get into debt wrote about how the sons should never be held responsible for the actions of their fathers.

Having said that, I'm really starting to get annoyed at the constant attacks against Reverend Wright. I may not agree with what he says but he uses a style that was common in his day and I will defend to the death his right to say it. What about that violently anti-Catholic preacher who endorsed McCain whose endorsement McCain has not publicly repudiated. Am I going to throw my opinion of McCain because of one person who supports him. Of course not!

Christopher, my point is, we really are all in this together. And ditto annoyed - his right to say it.

Very well written article! And yes its about time America (all of us!) need to get pass race issues. We America, are all effected, and in this together. We are all human, whatever your race or religious affiliations may be. We are all bonded by the constitution, and effected by decisions made and implemented by our goverment.

Oh cry me a river. I am so SICK of race talk. People have put race as the issue for Obama instead of qualifications, which to me is high level affirmative action. If you were born after 1964 then there is very little of the racism that our parents had to endure. What has come out is this "woe is me" song from blacks who want a handout, think people "owe" them something, and finally, hate blacks that somehow in this "racist" society have managed to do damn well, ie, Robert Johnson, Oprah, Obama even. Blacks need to look in their own house and face the fact that most of the damage in recent history has been our own doing.

Someone said it was about the races. When we compete to be the best of whatever is the worse it is all about the races. Black and white are the colors chosen to make one better than the other. Americans we are but what are we before we are the citizens of the USA. Mexicans and Canadians are they Americans well I don't really know that either because to me if you really want to make this what it is, we have to go to the very beginning. It's not about what race we are nor is it about what country we come from. What it is is the fact that we all make up a part of the human race or better yet we all are a part of mankind. We have been separated and will be separated when the end has come. Our togetherness is what will bring us to actually know who we are. But again we can't come to an agreement about anything as a whole. So we will continue to voice our opinions until we are faced with the decision of who do we really want to be with... TRUTH is if we keep allowing ourselves to be separated and confused to who we are and what we are our sanity will be only judged by ourselves. I think that being of both white and black blood means nothing because when it comes down to the real nitty gritty only the light shows our TRUE COLOR and when that light is taken away we are all too dark to see. We should all be joined together in the TRUTH about humankind. The exploitation of who we are and what we have become has taken us far apart even farther than the waters and mountains that separate us.

Delores I was born well prior to 1964, and I can tell you were too. Besides missing the point entirely, me thinks thou doth protest too much. Is your venom somehow less hateful and more American than Pastor Wright's?

Let's face it, those that want to go forward with the Wright issue are likely clintonistas or republicans trying to get some crap to stick to a very rightly Teflon Barak Obama.

Good article. But, Adele, they aren't going to address the issues. That's why the race and gender talk. Neither one has a PLAN.

Michelle, I gave you a ten, but don't agree with a lot of what you said. In the first place, only a very small amount of folks were wealthy enough to have slaves on their farms or plantations compared with the number of actual citizens. However, they all stood by and let the slave trade go on. My German and French ancestors came here around the 1880's and had nothing to do with slavery. In fact, we lived in the north, and my father was able to dig up some possible evidence that his great grandfather was part of the underground railroad.

Does this exonerate me? No...it does not. I was very young when the 1960's fight was going on, but I always remember my father getting extremely angry when he heard any racist comments towards blacks. I don't know what happened in Detroit back then, but I guess whites moved north to the new suburbs, and let black folks take over Detroit.

I assume the north was sympathetic to black folks, and many came here for auto industry jobs, but whites were to dumb to integrate, and they all fled the city. I can only imagine how wonderful Detroit could now be if the whites back in the 1930's, 40's...etc...had integrated...instead of moving out.

I agree with quite a bit of what Reverend Wright has spoken about. It is not one sided though. Black folks treat white folks like crap too nowadays! I go to the local store, and they are loud mouthed, block the aisles, and act like I'm not even there....they show zero respect for me, but I still say..."excuse me"...asking them to give me room to get by with my shopping cart.

They treat me like crap even though they don't know me or how I was raised to be free of racism due to my awesome father and mother. They assume I'm a cracker, and treat me as such. So the racism sword cuts both ways....make assumptions, and you are an asshole!

That said....I also know many black folks who are just awesome human beings, and know how to treat others as they want to be treated...Idiots of any race....make life harder for all of us!!! There are lots of white and black trash folks who just won't even try to make things work! I personally don't give a crap about your color or race......I only care if you are a friendly person...with respect for me....

As for me...my daughter is adopted from China....my two best friends are from Japan, and the inner city of Detroit....a really awesome black guy.....my auto mechanic is from the middle east...Sam is the most honest auto mechanic I've ever met...he even lets me work on the car with him...his wife is 100% white American, and she's a sweetheart...I feel very lucky to know these people....I'm getting sick of hearing about race being an issue here in America!

The real issue is the ultra wealthy controlling us all...Most or all of those folks are bankers, and either Jewish or some other white ethnicity....

I watched the pastor on a PBS show last night, and he is one smart human being. He seems like the kind of man who I would like to have as my best friend! Mainstream Media has become so biased due to their corporate ownership, that we can not even question a pathetic investigation of 9/11 without being called America haters! I assure you...9/11 was 100% an inside job!!! I'm a structural engineer, and part time firefighter....our media has been 100% corrupted by corrupt ownership...Rupert Murdoch rejoiced when 9/11 happened!!

Rated a 10. I have to take exception to one thing you said. Most whites are not descendants of slave owners. That is not to say that there isn't white privilege. There is and that needs to be recognized. But, the slave connection just isn't there for most whites.
