On Sunday, January 6, The Washington Post featured an article written by George McGovern entitled,"Why I Believe Bush Must Go: Nixon Was Bad. These Guys Are Worse". He makes a substantial and impressive case for why George W. Bush and Dick Cheney should be impeached. I encourage you to read it. Here is a link:

We are about to attack a third sovereign nation, Iran, unless God interferes. I am so disappointed in this nation that I would emigrate if I could.
God will judge them if God judges. This is not about God. It is about the fact that governments derive their power from the consent of the governed. Don't give the government your consent to abuse you!
Stepping down of the soapbox. . .

.If by some miracle an attempt is made to impeach Bush it would backfire. It will re-energize a now demoralized Republican base and the Democrats will lose in the next upcoming election. Also, the suggestion of War crimes is wishful thinking.
It's not likely to happen, however, not because it isn't justified and necessary, but because the democrats falsely believe exactly what Mickey here falsely believes. They believe that the rightwing media would eviscerate them, and the republicans in congress would refuse to hold the administration accountable, and the democrats would walk away mortally wounded by the attempt.
The other thing that holds them back is that they're totally happy with leaving a president with a 25-30% approval rating in office for the duration, so there's no need to refresh people's minds in November as to just how bad it is. If they were removed, the public scorn would shift to the Pelosi white house, and the GOP's chances in November would skyrocket from "Not a chance in hell" to "Slim to none."
Bottom line, regardless of the fact that congress doesn't have a choice in the matter...they're oath of office REQUIRES them to impeach corrupt, criminal public officials, the pussycrats are allowing politics to trump their sworn oath and constitutional obligation.
If we could somehow be assured that justice would follow these filthy rat bastards once they're finally exorcised from our white house, that would be one thing, but based upon what we've seen, historically, from these democrats, I think we can forget about that as well. I've resigned myself to the fact that the bush crime family is simply above all law, and will never, ever be held to account for anything, no matter how egregious or how heavily documented.
"Also, the suggestion of War crimes is wishful thinking. "
Torture is illegal.
Wars of aggression against soverign nations are illegal
Those are both war crimes.
Don't get me wrong, McGovern is on the mark about them being the worse we've seen, but when it comes to accountability we also need to look at ourselves. Gore may have won the popular vote in 2000, but Bush won solidly in 2004. You may not have voted for them, but the majority of Americans who voted did.
Our best revenge would be to truly inform ourselves of the choices before us now, speak to those who haven't yet awoken from this nightmare (could there still be any?), avoid the emotion that I often read (even here on Gather) and speak knowledgeably about the issues & candidates.
Then VOTE...and show concern that those around us do as well. The democracy we see being trampled today didn't start with BushCo. What percentage of the voting public actually went to the polls in 2000? I'm pretty sure it was less than 50%. That too is trampling democracy.
If I were a fortune teller, I would say once the current administration has left office, and a real investigation of the atrocities that have been and are still being commited in our name, under our Constitution, has been completed there will be more than enough evidence to convict many of our leaders:, for much more than 'war crimes'.
If the Republicans regain a majority the President and the Vice President could be spared. Thier Party will most certainly try to sweep everything clean. Haven't they already destroyed tapes and e-mail?
Sally, you may be right about this. I do think the truth will come out and books will be written. And I think that Bush will go down in history as one of the worst, if not the worst, presidents that this country has had.
