I've been jealous of my friend, lynn, who is always busy raking leaves. I haven't been able to even see any leaves or even my yard in the last 3 wks. So today, I hit on the next best thing - raking snow!
I'm sorry I couldn't take any action shots of myself doing this. But I had my hands full as it was. I got out one of my rakes, stood on the frozen snow under my eaves and proceeded to rake loose as much as I could. By throwing the rake as far as I could (and stil maintain a grip on the handle), I was able to clear about 18-24 inches around 3 sides of my house. It was a little easier clearing some of the roof over my hot tub as it isn't so high.

No one needs to worry that I was going to get buried under a lot of snow. Believe me, the snow was NOT anxious to come down. Along most of my roof line, there was up to 4 inches of ice, so I had to rake the snow over that. I was able to knock down all the icicles and by hammering on the ice, I could break loose some of that.

I had to work in about 20 minute intervals as my neck would get so sore from looking up at the roof and flinging the rake up. I was pretty pleased with what I was able to accomplish. We've been warned about the increasing snow weight from this rain. There have been many roof collapses around town already, mostly on businesses or sheds, not on homes.

This afternoon, my son in law got off work early to come over and help. He and my grandson worked for 3 hrs before I made them go home. Ray would shovel the snow off and Jacob cleared away whatever went in the driveway. They would have kept going as it took them til nearly 10 PM last night to clear their own roof. However, they hadn't had any dinner and Jacob was about to fall over with exhaustion. I told Ray if he didn't come down from the roof, I was going to come up there. He believed me and came down! They got about half of it done. I had about 5 ft of snow filling my sidewalk so then Ray had to shovel that clear so I could get to my garage.
I can say without any hesitation that I am SICK OF WINTER! And school is closed once again for tomorrow!

Strange how the pictures came out in different sizes.
enjoy what you can!!!! Salud
I do feel sorry for the mgr. and assistant mgr. who were out until 7pm last night using the spreader with the melter pellets. We also have a little tractor and a snow blower plus three residents who get a bit of extra money shoveling. My walks are one of the first areas cleaned because the lady across the walk from me works as a nurse and they try to accomodate her. I'm retired so if a day is bad I simply skip getting the mail and never have to go out at all.
That view of the fence shows more snow that I would want to deal with. I remember seeing my mother shoveling and shoveling, only to see the snow plow come and bury the driveway under more than she had removed.
My neighbor took his snowblower up on his roof today. My daughter saw someone with a rototiller on their roof! Not sure how great an idea that is. Maybe they wanted a rooftop garden.
every 0 degree centrigrade or celsius is equal to 32 degrees fahrenheit.
when i went about 4pm to do a little shopping, whoaaaa.... the air is choking... matter. I could feel like i was going to get overcooked.
My leaves are still in a pile, never got picked up, covered with snow. Leaving snow around the house foundation is good, it acts as an insulator from the cold winds. Never used the electric tape along the roof edge to prevent ice dams, but hear it works. But I think we've all had enough snow this year.
apart from that, it was exhilarating to be standing 20 feet above the ground. The neighborhood looks different from that angle.
work!!! You need to leave that to men Wilma, as you have enough problems with your neck and all!
Take care of yourself in all this wintery weather!!!
Roy, it was pretty hard to get around in the snow as it was so deep. Many side roads had never been plowed. The snow berms at corners cut off visibility so you couldn't see if a car was coming or not. Sidewalks were buried under 6 ft of icy chunks from the snowplows, garbage pick up has stopped in some areas, mail delivery is uncertain. In reality, it was really difficult to get much done. Kids haven't even been playing out in the snow. Initially it was too light for packing and then it got so deep, that smaller kids couldn't even walk in it.
Seems we have the same hobby right now! LOL! this is CRAZY to say the least! Now, I'm thinking about turning our house into an ark! :)
Our son flew back to Spokane on Sunday (I hope - would love to hear from him). Flight was delayed, again. I think we'll plan on his flying earlier next time.
Your mention of a chicken leg falling out of a beard reminded me of an incident when my son was about 15 and played soccer. Most of their games were played on the coast and so we stayed in a lot of motels. One of the boys had dreadlocks and the other kids in his hotel room got tired of the 'odor' and put him in the shower to shampoo his dreadlocks. They said all sorts of stuff came out! I don't think there were any chicken legs though.
It's 46 right now (3:30 PM) and no rain so that is helping with the melt. The wind is blowing too. Liam and I just made a trip out for some errands and the main streets are great. The side streets are still an icy, slushy rutted mess. It's supposed to be back down below freezing on Friday so I only hope the side roads melt clear before then!
"Another Pacific front passing through Saturday night may bring some rain and snow showers, but no major storms appear to be on our horizon for us over the 7 day period beginning Friday."
That would be wonderful!
I have heard there are some type of packets that people can throw up onto their roofs that will melt snow/ice. But it probably wouldn't do much for that much snow.
You are getting the Pineapple Express that missed us...however I hear they are closing I-5 because it is flooded...
I can only imagine how sick of winter you are...I didn't even enjoy Christmas because of all the walking up and down the hill in the snow. Nobody could shop for 2 weeks...poor stores.
A semi was blown over on I-82 at Ellensburg...
Here, we have moved on to mud flows, landslides, falling trees and floods. This weather is way whacked out.
You had more snow on your roof than we have on the ground here.
But, hark, we await a sled with little shovels and lots of Bailey's Irish Cream to fend through the snowy wilderness.
Has anyone suggested a hair dryer to melt the snow instead of shoveling it? Worth a try, with or without pigtails.
Such an enchanting landscape. But if you prefer desert warmth, shall I place some Arizona sunshine in a couple of glass jars and ship Fed Ex to your Siberian enclave overnight?
Airport, here we come!

oh but got to your mention of your poor neck..ooow:(
hoping you do not have any damage to your home,Wilma..
You are strong, you are invincible, you are woman with a rake!
(About to roar?)
It sure looks funny seeing all these women on the sidewalk in summer carrying in heavy jackets. LOL
We've had melting now for 5 days. The snow is finally gone off my roof though there are still 2 areas where the ice berm is lingering along the edge of the roof. The berms at intersections have shrunken to the point, you can see oncoming traffic. Fortunately, we don't get too much flooding right where I am. Nothing like they are having in western WA.
William, I may go back to my braids but never dreadlocks.
It's supposed to be in the mid 30's for our highs all week so should have some steady melting. My driveway is ALMOST clear of ice, though I still have a lake of ice where it goes into the road.
No more collapsing roofs now that so much has melted. We'd had 79 inches of snow by Saturday and that is way more than our usual winter total of 48 inches. The next 5 days don't show any snow in the forecast and I hope that's right!
Thanks for all your comments!
i was sick of the Winter wonderland after the first week and the compact snow with icy layers prevented my son from making it down to my place until the Sat. after Christmas.....
i hated not being able to drive at whim due to too slick hills between my rural area and town...
.this is the first time in 3 decades that i am seriously considering moving to another area, but need to do some research about snow levels and frequency of natural disasters if that is even possible these days what with the messed up climate changes....
the sun is suppose to make an appearance for several days which will help the rivers to recede....my 2 sheds were damaged last week from our last high wind/heavy 24/7 rain storms and the roof on one is mostly gone leaving only a buckled portion.....am still drying stored belongings and trying to salvage what i can.....within my recent photos you can see 2 shots i took from my backyard looking out at acres of pasture which is now a lake....
hang in there and hope you n' that roof will be okay...
cheers,gayle
The snow is for kids , not for us ....there has to be a better way.
One time in Michigan it snowed so bad I tried to dig my car out so that I could go to work.
I took a break came back out and the snow was back up past my bumper again.
I gave up and called in a snow day for me. You can't kill yourself over it...
If your aching to rake leaves, come to me Wilma, I have a ton.
