we just helped move our son to a new apartment. What a long day. I'm just too old to be going non-stop from 9 am to 6 pm. The killer was he was living on ther third floor. We helped to move him in last year and whoops... time to find a new place. Cheaper rent was the reason.
Did I mention that the high was 97 degrees and the humidity was 80% by the time we started? I think I drank a gallon of water and sweted it out... not a drop found my kidneys!
What an ordeal. I loe helping and supporting all my kids and this move sure tested my parenting character. And I always love it when I become the designated U-Haul driver. Thankfully it was a short move and we rented the smallest truck and only needed two trips.
Anyone else have any "fun" experiences regarding moving? The funnier the better as I'm icing down & nursing a sore knee and could use a laugh.

I feel for you and the stairs. I decided after my last place never to do that again!
For years we moved around on the Government's dime and were really pampered. They packed hauled and unpacked the big stuff. Today I really missed those days. Doing it yourself really is tough.
The loading wasn't hard except that it was just me and my husband, and while I may be tough, I'm still a girl and things were heavy! (oh yeah, we also lived up 2 large flights of stars... )
Our first mishap came in Kansas in the middle of nowhere. I was driving and happened to look into my side mirror and see what looks like rubber flapping from one of the tires on the car dolly (We rented the one that has the entire car being carried). So we pull off the next exit only to find a flat tire. Luckily they have 24/7 roadside assistance that comes with their tucks, but being that it was the middle of nowhere we had to wait... and wait... watching the sun set on the flat plains they finally came and fixed the flat and we were on the way.
Everything went relatively smoothly until the last leg of the journey where we came into Pennsylvania... If anyone remembers the terrible flooding that happened in NY and Pennsylvania in late June of 2006, they will understand that having to drive in the area was difficult! We just wanted to get home and everyway we tried was blocked by water. All the roads were closed and everyone wanted to go the ways we wanted to go. We live North of Albany so we were trying to get from Binghampton to Albany but it was impossible to get there directly. So with car in tow we headed north... and north... and north... where we finally (After about a 7 hour detour) managed to get to an open road to get us east. It was in the middle of the Adirondack mountains, so was twisty and turny... but got us home eventuallly...
It sure was an adventure! Then we had to unpack and carry everything up a flight of stairs!
The one moving day I recall was on my 6th birthday. We had moved from Fairfax VA to Dale City VA. The parents remembered about 10:00 pm and I had a cake with no frosting and no ice cream...I was devastated then but smart enough to realize whining at that moment would so not be a good idea. Parents seem to get stressed when moving, hehe.
Matt, I hope your not doubly sore tomorrow. Soak in some warm water, baby yourself and just keep chanting "I love my children, I love my children, I love my children."
BTW soon it will be time to move my daughter back to college. The only rule is that she can bring anything as long as it fits in my car... a little Scion xA. Last year was no problem. This year... we'll see.
We had the truck with a pickup on trailer behind it and both packed as tightly as we could. I followed in my Dodge Avenger. I had our dog who apparently is now traumatized from this trip because she won't go into a car anymore and since the trip, when she did go in the car she would bite herself until she bled. I also had the bird behind me in the cage. Anything we would need such as food and drink was in the trunk. All clothes and other things we needed were packed in the pick up truck for easy access. My son was in the passenger side of the truck. Oh and my son got a sick stomach three days before we left that continued through the first few days of the trip. We finally stopped putting clothes on him and just put him on towel in his diaper with a blanket.
We found out about the Santa Ana winds for the first (and last) time when I was so tired and so afraid that we would be blown off the highway. We parked between two big rigs at a rest stop that night because I was so scared and got coffee first thing in the morning at the next exit. We couldn't afford to sleep in hotels every night so many nights were spent in truck stops. My son was so fascinated with the trucks that he would stay awake for hours upon hours ooohing and aahhing at all the big rigs. My husband tried everything to block him from seeing them but the kid would not go down to sleep at all!
I watched and prayed that my husband and son would not get blown off the road through the whole trip because of the way both the truck and trailer fishtailed. I think our max speed with the trailer was 45 and if you went too quickly it would fishtail all over the place. It took us a long 7 days to finally get back. Not something I ever want to do again! But we did make it back without any incidents and no deer running into our paths.
