Leaving the hill town of Beverley in the dust, we traveled through hill and dale, the twenty or so kilometers to the historic, touristy town of York, the earliest inland settlement in Western Australia. Trendy cafes line the street....tourists everywhere. But are we interested in the beautiful, preserved Colonial architecture? Not at all...Mag is hell-bent on finding a Cafe or a hotel that sells a Big Breakfast at 11 0'clock in the morning. Once his belly is satisfied, we can amble around the town.

On our way into town.

This is the outside cafe we finally decided on.

I'm surprised to see Vegemite in the basket with honey and jam.

During breakfast, Magi is quite excited by the bikers and their motorcycles nearby. As you can tell, belly fed, second cup of coffee in hand, Mag is now a happy camper.

Across from the cafe was a beautiful, hotel with a wrap-around balcony.

Finishing brunch, we start to explore this Avon Valley town. I love the facade on the York Motor Museum.

On the side of a building further down the street, I see this sign and laughingly say "Hey, Mag...maybe your the saint they are looking for. You certainly have all the attributes of a Saint."

Outside the large building holding the Court House and Post Office, I see a familiar English phone booth.

I am curious about the inside of this historic hotel and so we wander inside.

I am intrigued by the Town Hall down the street.

The open door is a welcoming invitation and so we stroll inside.

Upstairs we find a balcony overlooking a large hall. In other rooms we find models and an old movie machine.

At this point, Mag tells me that he has been holding back the best part of a trip to York.....taking a hike down to the Avon River.
"Bob, I'm going to walk on water!"
"You may be a candidate for Saint of the Shire, but Mag, walk on water?"

As we reached the river, I understood what Magi meant.....a suspension bridge over the water.

Though Mag is afraid of heights, he bravely headed out across the bridge.

Moral of the York Story: With a Big Breakfast in your tummy, you can conquer all your fears.

As for York, it is nice the town fathers realized the historic nature of the town and got grant money to restore it. So many places in Australia, like in the US, historic buildings have been demolished to make room for modern, sterile structures.
Bob, the folk of York realize the tourist-dollar value of keeping the town in a pristine state. And me fed.
Karen, I think Bob was trying to shake me off. LOL
The breakfast certainly is big and artery clogging! Yum!
Enjoyed the tour of the buildings, impressive glass window in the courthouse - hope you got some close ups of that.
Magi must really be the trooper, I would not have gone anywhere until I had at least two cups of coffee and something in my tummy.
West Oz is indeed beautiful - where they serve BIG breakfasts ... if you know which cafes to go to. There one can sit and eat and blab away, in a New England kind of way. As to being scared, Bob has heroically kept her silence in the white-knuckle rides with me at the wheel.
So do you like the Vegemite?
I went on a similar bridge in Costa Rica...now I am missing it again!
Love that hotel with the wrap around porch~
This well-preserved town is lovely, Elizabeth.
you two must have had a wonderful time "down under!
Everything is so clean there. It strikes me again and again in all your photo essays.
West Oz is indeed clean - everywhere, and that is how we like it here.
Great photos, glad I came along. Aren't the buildings so very interesting.
So glad Magi (and Bob) finally got breakfast! (-:
I agree with Vicky... that picture of Magi with the coffee cup held aloft is a great shot. I am also struck by how clean the Oz surroundings are in every photo you posted, Bob... even the streets! We should be inspired to keep our US places just as clean and neat.
We try to keep West Oz spotless.
Mag, you are a tall, distinguished gent!
Such a beautiful country... and so close....ha....
maybe with green eggs and ham...:)
My heart was hiding in my boots as I tramped across the bridge ... sigh, the things I do for a photograph.
even if it's toast
Bacon and Eggs in a Country Town
Is what we like the Most!
It may be high in calories
and not so low on fat
But you're burning off the energy
You can't deny me that !
I have been to that rickety bridge but was not game to cross it either. Well done Magi.
If the bridge doesn't lead to anything vital I ain't crossing.
I am very glad I searched out ee-bob's icon. I have been missing so much of the good stuff on gather.
This qualifies as some of the "best stuff" on G today.
Blessings on your both,
Wilka
