The other day we took a road trip to the historic village of York. Nestled on the banks of the Avon River in the gently rolling farmlands of the beautiful Avon Valley, the country town of York is 97km east from Perth. As Western Australia's first inland settlement, York offers unique insights into a rich and colourful past both before and following European settlement in 1831.
Magi decided we would make a loop and travel first up the Brookton Highway to the village of Beverley and then on to York, returning home through Mundaring. The Brookton Highway is a winding, mountainous road that passes sheep farms and fields and fields of wheat and canola fields. Magi travels these roads in his Ford Focus as if we were on his motorbike. I sit glued to my seat as he winds in and out of traffic. Every once in awhile I see something that catches my eye and with cameras in hand, we explore our surroundings.

I can't believe the fields of yellow. At first, I think they are yellow daisies but then Magi explains it is canola fields (Canola oil is made from these flowers.)

Large sheep farms are around every bend.

Then I see these fantastic boulders...."Mag, stop.....look at all these big rocks." At times, I think he thinks I'm off my rocker, but nevertheless, he smiles and brings the Indy 500 Ford Focus to a stop.

Next I spot what I think was a wonderful old barn that has so much character. Magi explains it's not a barn but an old country farmhouse. I wander around taking pictures all the while wondering what family occupied this bleak farmhouse. Now it is used as a tool shed but peeking in between the old boards, Magi right, it was a home at one time.

Take a close look at what I am wearing. Mag was tired of my red sweatshirt and purple fleece.......so this morning when we started out, he handed me his extra-large white Gather sweatshirt that he won for some comment he made on Gather. So today, I look like the Pillsbury Dough girl or a big hot-air balloon.
No sooner are we in the car then we stop once again. Magi loves churches and I think I have been in more houses of prayer and cemeteries these past two weeks then I have in the last ten years.
I think Magi may be concerned about my soul.

As we leave the cemetery, across the street I see a stone marker and beyond a fence the ruins of a farmhouse. Of course I need to wander across the road to take pictures despite Magi's tummy rumbling. It's now almost 11 o'clock and the guy is hungry. He wants to get to the country town of Beverley so he can have his Big Breakfast! I assure him I will only be a few minutes....and run across the street.

Finally we reach Beverley....like Toodyay and York, Beverley has preserved many of it's historic buildings....but taking images right now is not on Mag's mind. We go into a Cafe and Mag orders two Big Breakfasts.....and is sadly dismayed to learn that the Cafe stopped serving breakfast at ten thirty. It is also the only eatery in Beverley.
"We're out of here, Bob....we'll get a shot of the downtown area and the Victorian Tudor Railroad Station and be on our way to York."

Will Mag get his Big Breakfast? Stay tune for our afternoon in York.

Great journal of your trip, as always.
GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY, SORRY BOUT BREAKFAST, MAGI aka WIZARD OF ID, MAYBE WHEN YOU GET TO CARVER, MASS, USA. We'll hide the silver. Ah and breakfast at "D's" omlett shop. Ah, mag has she stopped talking yet. motor mouth can, keep a champian driver off the road and crawlin around in the fields. Have you had to pick up road-kill for her yet? Most wonderful work you two. When he grows up, Papa will be a gatherite. Himself
We've seen a number of dead roos beside the road but we gave such a big miss.
Thank you for the kind comments. It's time you were a Gatherite - start posting!
Wow... those canola fields are a new sight for me! I would love to see those in person. Great commentary to go with your lovely photos, Bob.
PS... I hope you packed a granola bar or two in that backpack to tide Magi over until he could get a regular, if late, breakfast?
Bob had packed some fruit for us to munch on ... it kept me going until bacon and eggs were acquired in the town of York.
I came back to take another look at your canola fields. I am amazed once again at how gorgeous they are. The joy and blessing you received from seeing them firsthand must be the same feelings I get when I look over unending fields of ripening corn here in the Midwest on a beautiful autumn day, when the air is crisp and fragrant and the sun is warm upon ones face.
We went crabbing together.
But on a more current subject, do the Bacon and eggs make Magi the "Grand old Duke of York?"
With Big Breakfast in front of him, Allen, Magi definitely is "The Grand Duke of York".
Papa, a new essay is up for your viewing.
not elizabeth who is busy writing these wonderful journal entries for us.
All typos above by the Imac key trolls, always lurking under those keys waiting to trip up the unsuspecting one finger typist. keep um comin guys.
i heve never seen canola fields.
Featured in the Triple Name Club.
the USA is big, even bigger - but we never traverse most of the places anymore....that is what is great about your trip - flying to all the parts....
I always got a kick out of the Brits when they sent parts of SouthEnd London to the New World as a PUNISHMENT!!! hahaha....joke is on the BRITS...the best country, the best people, the best scenery EVER~

Sorry to have been such a stranger to your photographic missives Bob and Magi, but with school hols and visitors I've been a tadgeling distracted and havent been enjoying my usual solitary hours. That will all be fixed soon and I hope to catch up properly on my next Happy Dance Monday. hugs and kisses til then.
Hey, today we had meat pies while we were out. And of course we have had fish and chips a number of times!
But Magi does know how to cook....I'm not saying he's an excellent cook... but we are NOT starving.
Lovely, the yellow fields look what we call flax fields in Germany, always a beautiful sight.
The stone church was a neat stop along with the marker for the pioneers, great chapter in your travelogue - go feed that magi - don't ya know the first rule of womanhood? Always feed your man! JK - fabulous essay, Bob!
Beautiful pics and it looks like both of you have a wonderful time!
Compared tp Australia , it seems you can see the whole Greece in one day! hehehehe
I'd be glad to stop and visit all the churches and cemeteries with Magi. I certainly hope he got breakfast soon after this.
