InfranView is a great freeware program that you can download at http://www.irfanview.com and have a really fun time playing with and distorting your own images, as well as using it for normal, everyday editing. The latest version is 4.10.
It has an "Image Effects Browser" with a before and after picture so you can choose what effect you want to apply and then see immediate results:

Cool, huh?
Here are some of the fun things I've done with InfranView (on one of those days I had nothing better to do! ;-D ):

This is called "Metallic Ice"...Looks like I've slept overnight in a meat Locker!

OK, let's face it...I'm GOLDEN! ;-D . This is called "Metallic Gold".

This is called the "Cylindrical Effect".

Now I'm forgetting which effect I've used here, but it's easy enough to figure it out yourself. I remind myself of some big fat alien from "The Fifth Element" in this one! Creepy!

Time to get my nose fixed - Maybe an entire face lift??? What do you think? This is called the "Fish Eye" effect.

"Nightmare Nancy" - TWFW..."Too Weird for Words" ;-D

Another cylindrical effect, I think...just a different picture.

Now, here's your class "Block Head" - move over, Charlie Brown!

"Rock" Effect...I dunno...Do I look like a rock to you? "I am a rock, I am an iiiiiiiii-land..."
Now I am going to DISINTEGRATE, right before your very eyes!!! (just you watch:)

Beginning to break up (and breaking up is hard to do, as anyone knows!)

I'm definitely well on my way to losing my corporeal body here...

Oh my, I'm pixelating to death!!!

GOODBYE, CRUEL WORLD!
Hope this gave you some ideas as to how to apply these effects to other types of pictures where it can really make for a dynamic effect! These were really just for demos and for fun! I'd love to see what some of you come up with using your own photos, should you decide to download InfranView.
