Photo Essay Contest. Last Sunday my granddaughter and I Paid a visit to the Santa Clara County Fair, held in San Jose, CA. The first fair was held in 1941. We've been going to the fair for many, many, years. It was the last day of the 5 day run. We enjoyed ourselves very much... Won't you join us?

Fairs are part of Americana..... Visit your local fair!
We visited the many different displays, from the Home Arts buildings where all the preserved foods, sewing and cooking displays are housed to the animal barns to see the animals.

Why not lay in your food dish.... it's big enough! Baby goats, aren't they cute?
There were Pigs

Wow he's one big boy! These pigs are raised by kids from 4-H and FFA. They are gotten as babies and then raised by the kids.
Sweet Sorrow... saying goodbye.

The animals are raised from babies by the kids. They are auctioned off at the fair. This girl is having a hard time saying goodbye to her pig! My granddaughter said she would not be able to do that.
There's always great food for sale at a fair!

Funnel Cakes, Smoothies, Shaved ice! and much more
Yummmmmmm.... A strawberry, whipped cream topped Funnel Cake!

Stephanie getting a Funnel Cake for us to share! It was really good too! :-)
There were many shows to see. There were Jugglers, a hypnotist, and a major band at the grandstand show, just to mention a few.

They Juggled fire

Here the Jugglers were juggling 6 torches between the two of them.
The Hypnotist had a really fun show.

The Hypnotist with her subjects! It was fun to watch, but I wouldn't get up there! My granddaughters and daughter did at a previous fair several years ago.
We went to the main concert later that evening

The main grandstand show that evening was the Gregg Rolie Band. The band has several members of the original Santana and Journey. They played many of the songs from the first 3 Santana albums. They were really great! I got hit in the head with one of the many drum sticks they threw out into the audience and I didn't even get it.... some jerk behind me grabbed it! grrrrrrrr..... LOL It didn't hurt me thank goodness!
This is Gregg Rolie playing with his band.

And then the midway......

Giant Slide

Games

Lots of things to win.... if you have enough money to throw away! No thanks!
Tilt-A-Whirl

This on one of my favorite rides when I was a kid! I love the colors of this one, they are so bright and cheery!
Fun house

This looks like a fun fun house! It's sure is an eye catcher. Rock n' Roll America..... love the name!
A great ending to a lovely day!

There was a lovely 30 minute fireworks display to close the fair for the 2007 run.

When you take pictures--you have a way of inviting us in on the fun. This collection is no exception. Again, wonderful job!

But I assume it is off to the slaughter house?
For taking me to a place that I've never been
My grandkids raise pigs to take to the fair. They have a hard time saying goodbye, too. I couldn't do it. But, when they get that 300 or so dollars in their hands, they get their reward for a job well done.

Loved this photo essay!
Arlen, sorry to hear about the biting horse! I hope you still have all your fingers!
Would it be OK for an adult to ride that slide a few times?
