At the request of another Gather member, one of my contacts, I'm placing this warning to anyone about to read. This drabble was written for week 8s theme, with the intent to bring one of the stories characters to sobbing w/out the other character(s) touching or speaking to him/her. It speaks toward animal cruelty and the insensitivities some have toward animals.
It seemed to happen so quickly, perhaps because I'd only just come upon them, my high school friends, and the "deed" was already in progress. I smelled the gasoline, saw the lit match. There I was in full outcry as the lit fur bloomed into a miniature inferno. The screams of the cat far outlasted the visual, as she blindly ran in her pain and confusion, unable to seek and receive help. How could they not understand the depth of their cruelty? My sobs are still on the surface of my heart, the tears quick to drop, when memory surfaces.

My experience with teenagers (even as one) has been an interesting observation and interaction. There are many cruelties among them, as they explore their power while growing into adulthood. Thank heavens most of them find they don't enjoy cruelty and grow into loving, responsible adults (ok....at least at varying levels of such...lol)
I've seen many animals suffer cruelty, but always after the fact and usually long after the occurrence (when emotional and mental traumas have replaced the physical pains). Sometimes the cruelty has been through the hands of humans, sometimes by other animals. I always hold the animals close in my heart and prayers.
Very well done.
If I were to make a suggestion, it might be to cut the first, rather long, sentence into two.
Really, though, thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it.

Thank you, Ruthe. I hope you read my comment above, explaining that this drabble is fiction. Unfortunately, too often the cruelty really does occur. My question in the drabble, "How could they not understand the depth of their cruelty?" is for all those who commit cruelty; to any life. While I know it to be true (that they don't understand it or even think of it as cruelty in the same ways 'normal' people do, I'll never 'get it'.
Aside from that the writing was good and the story good.. I just can't stand animal cruelty (even if it is fake in fiction or movies)
